45. Seeing <strong>the</strong>n that <strong>the</strong> Shriek <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Joy in <strong>the</strong> Virtue <strong>of</strong><br />
God (which breaks <strong>the</strong> Doors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deep Darkness) thus springs<br />
up in <strong>the</strong> Heart, and flies with its Glimpse [or Sparkling] into<br />
<strong>the</strong> Head, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Virtue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Joy sets itself above, as being<br />
<strong>the</strong> strongest, and <strong>the</strong> Flash [or Glance] beneath, as being <strong>the</strong><br />
weakest; and so when <strong>the</strong> Flash [or Glance] comes into <strong>the</strong><br />
Head into its Seat, <strong>the</strong>n it makes itself two open Gates. For it<br />
has broken <strong>the</strong> Doors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deep Darkness, and <strong>the</strong>refore it continues<br />
no more in <strong>the</strong> Darkness, but it must be free as a victorious<br />
Prince [or Conqueror,] and will not be held captive.<br />
And this signifies to us <strong>the</strong> Resurrection <strong>of</strong> Christ from <strong>the</strong><br />
dead, who is now free, and will not be held [<strong>the</strong>rein,] which<br />
in its due Place shall be very deeply described. And those Gates<br />
which <strong>the</strong> Glance holds open, <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> Eyes, and <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong><br />
Joy is <strong>the</strong>ir Root, which [Spirit] springs up at first in <strong>the</strong><br />
Kindling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life.<br />
46. Thus <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> strong reconceived Will (to fly out from<br />
<strong>the</strong> Darkness and to be in <strong>the</strong> Light in <strong>the</strong> Heart) generates<br />
itself; and <strong>the</strong>refore we cannot know [or apprehend] it to be any<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> noble Virgin, <strong>the</strong> Wisdom <strong>of</strong> God; which thus<br />
springs up in Joy, and in <strong>the</strong> Beginning marries herself with <strong>the</strong><br />
Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, and helps it to <strong>the</strong> Light, which after <strong>the</strong><br />
springing up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul (viz. after <strong>the</strong> Kindling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Virtue<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sun in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s) puts herself into its paradisical Center,<br />
and continually warns <strong>the</strong> Soul, z <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ungodly Ways, which<br />
are held before it by <strong>the</strong> Stars and Elements, and brought into<br />
its <strong>Essence</strong>s. Therefore <strong>the</strong> Virgin keeps her Throne thus in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Heart, and also in <strong>the</strong> Head, that she may defend and keep<br />
<strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong>f from <strong>the</strong> Soul, all over.<br />
47. And we must fur<strong>the</strong>r a consider, that when <strong>the</strong> Shriek [or<br />
Crack] makes its Dwellinghouse, in its strong Breakingthrough,<br />
out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> anxious Darkness, viz. <strong>the</strong> Tongue, that<br />
<strong>the</strong> Shriek [or Crack] has not <strong>the</strong>n yet seen <strong>the</strong> Virgin; but<br />
when it reflected [or shined] back again into <strong>the</strong> Heart, into <strong>the</strong><br />
opened Darkness, and found her so habitable, <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>n first<br />
sprung up its Joy, and Pleasantness, and it became paradisical,<br />
and desired not [to go] into <strong>the</strong> Tongue again, but into <strong>the</strong> Head,<br />
and [desired] <strong>the</strong>re to have its Region out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Heart. Therefore <strong>the</strong> Tongue ought not in all [or altoge<strong>the</strong>r]<br />
to be believed, for it sits not in <strong>the</strong> heavenly Region, as <strong>the</strong><br />
friendly pleasant Virtue [does;] but it has its Region in <strong>the</strong><br />
Crack and Flash, and <strong>the</strong> Flash is as near <strong>the</strong> hellish Region, as<br />
<strong>the</strong> Crack is, for <strong>the</strong>y are both generated in <strong>the</strong> b Sharpness <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Stars, in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s, and <strong>the</strong> Tongue speaks both Lyes and
