are Men) can certainly f conceive [<strong>of</strong> that which is] in <strong>the</strong> Principle<br />
<strong>of</strong> God, and also [<strong>of</strong> that which is] in <strong>the</strong> anguishing Kingdom<br />
<strong>of</strong> Hell, where <strong>the</strong> Worm <strong>of</strong> our Soul in <strong>the</strong> Beginning<br />
in Adam originally is, and this no o<strong>the</strong>r Creature can do.<br />
7. But <strong>the</strong>y think [consider or imagine] only how to fill <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />
and multiply, that <strong>the</strong>ir Life may subsist; and we also receive<br />
g no more from <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stars and Elements. And<br />
h <strong>the</strong>refore also our Children are naked and bare, with great Inability,<br />
and without Understanding; and now if <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> this<br />
World had full [perfect and absolute] Power over <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Child, <strong>the</strong>n he would easily put his rough Garment upon<br />
it also (viz. a rough Hide) but he must let that alone: And he<br />
must leave <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> first and second Principle, to<br />
Man’s own Choosing, to bind and yield himself to which [Principle]<br />
he will; which Man has (undeniably) in his full Power,<br />
which I will explain in its own Place according to its Worth, and<br />
deeply demonstrate it, in Spite <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> Gates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Devil, and<br />
this World, which strive much against it.<br />
8. Our Life in <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r’s Body has its Beginning wholly, as<br />
is above mentioned, and stands <strong>the</strong>re now in <strong>the</strong> Quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Sun and Stars, where <strong>the</strong>n, with <strong>the</strong> Kindling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light, a<br />
Center springs up again, where instantly <strong>the</strong> noble Tincture thus<br />
generates itself (out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light, out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> joyful <strong>Essence</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> [sour] harsh, bitter, and fiery Kind [or Quality,]) and sets<br />
<strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul in a great pleasant Habitation: And <strong>the</strong><br />
three i <strong>Essence</strong>s (viz. Harshness, Bitterness, and Fire) are in <strong>the</strong><br />
Kindling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life so very fast bound one to ano<strong>the</strong>r, that <strong>the</strong>y<br />
cannot (in Eternity) be separated one from ano<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong><br />
Tincture is <strong>the</strong>ir eternal House, wherein <strong>the</strong>y dwell, which<br />
[House] <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>mselves generate from <strong>the</strong> Beginning unto<br />
Eternity, which again gives <strong>the</strong>m Life, Joy, and Lust [or<br />
Delight.]<br />
The strong Gate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> indissoluble Band <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul.<br />
9. Behold, <strong>the</strong> three <strong>Essence</strong>s, (viz. [Sourness or] Harshness,<br />
Bitterness and Fire) are <strong>the</strong> Worm or Spirit [that dies not.]<br />
k Harshness is one <strong>Essence</strong>, and it is in <strong>the</strong> Fiat <strong>of</strong> God, out <strong>of</strong><br />
God’s eternal Will; and in <strong>the</strong> Attracting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> [sour] Harshness<br />
f Meditate, consider, or think <strong>of</strong>.<br />
g Than <strong>the</strong> Beasts do.<br />
h Because our <strong>Essence</strong>s have a higher Beginning than <strong>the</strong> Beasts.<br />
i Beings or Substances.<br />
k Or Sourness.<br />
is <strong>the</strong> Sting [or Prickle] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bitterness, which <strong>the</strong> [sour]<br />
Harshness cannot endure, but attracts continually <strong>the</strong> more<br />
forcibly to it, from whence <strong>the</strong> Prickle continually grows
