Tincture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, to <strong>the</strong> k Element, and reaches after <strong>the</strong> Element;<br />

but it attains no more than to <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sun, which<br />

is proceeded out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Quinta Essentia, out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Element.<br />

And thus <strong>the</strong> Stars and Elements rule in <strong>the</strong>ir Light and Virtue,<br />

which is <strong>the</strong> Sun’s, and qualify with <strong>the</strong> Soul, and bring many<br />

Distempers, and also Diseases into <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s, from whence<br />

come Stitches, Agues, Swellings and [o<strong>the</strong>r] Sicknesses, [as]<br />

<strong>the</strong> Plague, &c. into those [<strong>Essence</strong>s,] and at last <strong>the</strong>ir Corruption<br />

and Death.<br />

53. And now when <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> three <strong>Principles</strong> shines;<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Tincture goes forth from all <strong>the</strong> three <strong>Principles</strong>, and<br />

e Or catches.<br />

f Reconceived.<br />

g Or Joy.<br />

h Or allays it with Trembling for Joy.<br />

i The Shriek or Crack.<br />

k The inward one Element.<br />

it is highly [worthy] to be observed, that <strong>the</strong> middlemost Principle<br />

receives no Light from Nature; but as soon as <strong>the</strong> Darkness<br />

is broken up, [or dispelled,] it shines in most joyful Inhabitation,<br />

and [has] <strong>the</strong> noble Virgin dwelling in <strong>the</strong> Joy, viz. in<br />

that Tincture; and <strong>the</strong> Deity appears so very highly and powerfully<br />

in Man, that we cannot find it so in any o<strong>the</strong>r Thing, let us<br />

take what we will else into our Consideration.<br />

54. In <strong>the</strong> first Principle is <strong>the</strong> Fireflash; and in <strong>the</strong> Tincture<br />

<strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> is <strong>the</strong> l terrible Light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sun, which has its Original<br />

very sharply out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eternal Originality, out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />

Principle, with its Root out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth <strong>Essence</strong>, through <strong>the</strong><br />

Element, which may be explained in ano<strong>the</strong>r Place, it would be<br />

too long to do it here. And besides it should be hidden; he that knows<br />

it, will conceal it, as he would also [conceal] <strong>the</strong> Springingup<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stars and Planets. For <strong>the</strong> cornered Cap will needs<br />

have it under <strong>the</strong> Jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> his Schoollearning, though<br />

indeed he apprehends little or nothing at all in <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> Nature.<br />

Let it remain [hidden] till <strong>the</strong> Time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lily, <strong>the</strong>re it stands<br />

all m open: And <strong>the</strong> Tincture is [<strong>the</strong>n] <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World.<br />

55. And it is here very exactly seen how <strong>the</strong> third Principle<br />

n unites itself with <strong>the</strong> first, and how <strong>the</strong>y have one [only] Will,<br />

for <strong>the</strong>y proceed from one ano<strong>the</strong>r; and if <strong>the</strong> second Principle<br />

was not in <strong>the</strong> Midst [between <strong>the</strong>m] <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y were but one<br />

[and <strong>the</strong> same] Thing. But speaking here <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tincture in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Life, we will <strong>the</strong>refore show in <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> Nature <strong>the</strong> true<br />

Ground <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> three Births.<br />

56. The noble Tincture is <strong>the</strong> Dwellinghouse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit,<br />

and has three Forms; one is eternal, and incorruptible; <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

is mutable [or transitory,] and yet with <strong>the</strong> Holy [or Saints]
