if it be a Thought to [be expressed in] a Word, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Lips<br />
are <strong>the</strong> Doorkeepers, which must keep it shut, and not let <strong>the</strong><br />
Tongue forth, but must bring it into <strong>the</strong> Region <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Air, into<br />
<strong>the</strong> z Nostrils, and not into <strong>the</strong> Heart, and stifle it, and <strong>the</strong>n it<br />
is dead.<br />
15. And when <strong>the</strong> Taste has tried it, and if it be good for<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, <strong>the</strong>n it gives it to <strong>the</strong> Feeling, which<br />
must try what Quality it is <strong>of</strong>, whe<strong>the</strong>r hot or cold, hard or s<strong>of</strong>t,<br />
thick or thin, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Feeling a sends it into <strong>the</strong> Heart,<br />
[presenting it] before <strong>the</strong> Flash <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life, and before <strong>the</strong> King<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> Life; and <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mind b pierces fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />
into that Thing, a great Depth, and sees what is <strong>the</strong>rein, [considering]<br />
how much it will receive and take in <strong>of</strong> that Thing,<br />
and when it is enough, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Will gives it to <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Soul, viz. to <strong>the</strong> eternal c Emperor, who brings it (with his<br />
strong and austere Might) out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heart, in <strong>the</strong> Sound upon<br />

<strong>16</strong>. For <strong>the</strong> Region <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Air must here drive <strong>the</strong> Work<br />
through <strong>the</strong> Throat, where <strong>the</strong>n all <strong>the</strong> Veins in <strong>the</strong> whole Body<br />
tend and concur, and bring <strong>the</strong> Virtue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> noble Tincture<br />
towards that, and mingle <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> Word; and <strong>the</strong>re<br />
also all <strong>the</strong> three Regions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mind come, and mingle <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />
with <strong>the</strong> Distinguishing, [Framing, Articulating, or Separating]<br />
<strong>of</strong> Words; and <strong>the</strong>re is a very wonderful Form, [or<br />
Manner <strong>of</strong> Work.] For every Region [or Dominion] will distinguish<br />
[or separate] <strong>the</strong> Word according to its <strong>Essence</strong>s, for<br />
<strong>the</strong> Sound goes out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heart, out <strong>of</strong> all three <strong>Principles</strong>.<br />
17. The first will fashion it according to its fierce Might and<br />
Pomp, and mingles <strong>the</strong>rein prickly [stinging] Sourness, Wrath<br />
and Malice. And <strong>the</strong> second Principle with <strong>the</strong> Virgin stands<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Midst, and sheds its Rays <strong>of</strong> loving Meekness <strong>the</strong>rein,<br />
and resists <strong>the</strong> first [Principle.] And if <strong>the</strong> Spirit be kindled<br />
in e that, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Word is wholly gentle, friendly, and humble,<br />
and inclines itself to <strong>the</strong> Love <strong>of</strong> our Neighbour; it desires not<br />
to seize upon any with <strong>the</strong> haughty Sting [or Prickle] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
