if it be a Thought to [be expressed in] a Word, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Lips<br />

are <strong>the</strong> Door­keepers, which must keep it shut, and not let <strong>the</strong><br />

Tongue forth, but must bring it into <strong>the</strong> Region <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Air, into<br />

<strong>the</strong> z Nostrils, and not into <strong>the</strong> Heart, and stifle it, and <strong>the</strong>n it<br />

is dead.<br />

15. And when <strong>the</strong> Taste has tried it, and if it be good for<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, <strong>the</strong>n it gives it to <strong>the</strong> Feeling, which<br />

must try what Quality it is <strong>of</strong>, whe<strong>the</strong>r hot or cold, hard or s<strong>of</strong>t,<br />

thick or thin, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Feeling a sends it into <strong>the</strong> Heart,<br />

[presenting it] before <strong>the</strong> Flash <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life, and before <strong>the</strong> King<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> Life; and <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mind b pierces fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

into that Thing, a great Depth, and sees what is <strong>the</strong>rein, [considering]<br />

how much it will receive and take in <strong>of</strong> that Thing,<br />

and when it is enough, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Will gives it to <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Soul, viz. to <strong>the</strong> eternal c Emperor, who brings it (with his<br />

strong and austere Might) out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heart, in <strong>the</strong> Sound upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tongue under <strong>the</strong> Ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mouth, and <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> Spirit<br />

d distinguishes according to <strong>the</strong> Senses, as <strong>the</strong> Will has discovered<br />

[or manifested] it, and <strong>the</strong> Tongue d distinguishes it in <strong>the</strong> Noise.<br />

<strong>16</strong>. For <strong>the</strong> Region <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Air must here drive <strong>the</strong> Work<br />

through <strong>the</strong> Throat, where <strong>the</strong>n all <strong>the</strong> Veins in <strong>the</strong> whole Body<br />

tend and concur, and bring <strong>the</strong> Virtue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> noble Tincture<br />

towards that, and mingle <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> Word; and <strong>the</strong>re<br />

also all <strong>the</strong> three Regions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mind come, and mingle <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Distinguishing, [Framing, Articulating, or Separating]<br />

<strong>of</strong> Words; and <strong>the</strong>re is a very wonderful Form, [or<br />

Manner <strong>of</strong> Work.] For every Region [or Dominion] will distinguish<br />

[or separate] <strong>the</strong> Word according to its <strong>Essence</strong>s, for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sound goes out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heart, out <strong>of</strong> all three <strong>Principles</strong>.<br />

17. The first will fashion it according to its fierce Might and<br />

Pomp, and mingles <strong>the</strong>rein prickly [stinging] Sourness, Wrath<br />

and Malice. And <strong>the</strong> second Principle with <strong>the</strong> Virgin stands<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Midst, and sheds its Rays <strong>of</strong> loving Meekness <strong>the</strong>rein,<br />

and resists <strong>the</strong> first [Principle.] And if <strong>the</strong> Spirit be kindled<br />

in e that, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Word is wholly gentle, friendly, and humble,<br />

and inclines itself to <strong>the</strong> Love <strong>of</strong> our Neighbour; it desires not<br />

to seize upon any with <strong>the</strong> haughty Sting [or Prickle] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

first Principle, but it f covers <strong>the</strong> Prickles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Thorns, and<br />

qualifies <strong>the</strong> Word with Clearness [and Plainness,] and arms <strong>the</strong>
