59. And in this Tincture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first Principle, <strong>the</strong> Devil<br />

tempted Man; for it is his Source, [Wellspring, or Property,]<br />

wherein he also lives. Herein he reaches into <strong>the</strong> Heart <strong>of</strong> Man,<br />

into his Soul’s <strong>Essence</strong>s, and leads him away from God, into <strong>the</strong><br />

Desire to live in <strong>the</strong> sharp (viz. in <strong>the</strong> fiery) <strong>Essence</strong>s, that it<br />

might be elevated above <strong>the</strong> Humility and <strong>the</strong> Meekness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Heart <strong>of</strong> God, and above <strong>the</strong> Love and Meekness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Creatures,<br />

[on Purpose to seem] to be <strong>the</strong> only fair and glistering Worm in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Fireflash, and to domineer over <strong>the</strong> second Principle. And<br />

[thus] he makes <strong>the</strong> Soul <strong>of</strong> Man so extremely proud, as not to<br />

q Numb.<br />

r The active Life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gall.<br />

vouchsafe himself to be in <strong>the</strong> least like any Meekness, but to be<br />

like all whatsoever lives in a Quality [or Property] contrary to it.<br />

60. And in <strong>the</strong> bitter <strong>Essence</strong>s s he makes <strong>the</strong> Worm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Soul prickly, spiteful, envious, and malicious, grudging every<br />

Thing to any; as <strong>the</strong> Bitterness indeed is in Friendship with nothing,<br />

but it stings and grinds, raves and rages like <strong>the</strong> Abyss <strong>of</strong><br />

Hell, and it is <strong>the</strong> true House <strong>of</strong> Death as to <strong>the</strong> pleasant Life.<br />

61. And in <strong>the</strong> sour [or harsh] <strong>Essence</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tincture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Worm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, he infects <strong>the</strong> sour t harsh <strong>Essence</strong>, whereby it<br />

becomes sharply attractive, and gets a Will to draw all to itself,<br />

and yet is not able to do it; for <strong>the</strong> conceived Will is not easily<br />

filled, but is a dry hellish thirsty Hunger to have all; and if it<br />

did get all, yet <strong>the</strong> Hunger would not be <strong>the</strong> less, but it is <strong>the</strong><br />

eternal Hunger and Thirst <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Abyss, <strong>the</strong> Will <strong>of</strong> Hellfire,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> all Devils, who continually hunger and thirst, and yet eat<br />

nothing; but it is <strong>the</strong>ir satiating, that <strong>the</strong>y [suck or], draw into<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong> strong Source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> harsh,<br />

bitter Might <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fire, wherein consists <strong>the</strong>ir Life and Satiating;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Abyss <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wrath and <strong>of</strong> Hell is also such [a Thing.]<br />

62. And this is <strong>the</strong> Source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first Principle, which (without<br />

<strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> God) cannot be o<strong>the</strong>rwise, nei<strong>the</strong>r can it change<br />

or alter itself; for it has been so from Eternity. And out <strong>of</strong> this<br />

Source, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Worm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, in <strong>the</strong> Time <strong>of</strong> its<br />

creating, were extracted by <strong>the</strong> Fiat <strong>of</strong> God, and created in Paradise,<br />

[and set] u before <strong>the</strong> Light <strong>of</strong> God, which enlightened <strong>the</strong><br />

Fireflash, and put it into very high Meekness and Humility.<br />

63. For because Man was to be eternal, <strong>the</strong>refore he must also<br />

come to be out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eternal; for nothing is created out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fountain <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heart <strong>of</strong> God. For that is <strong>the</strong> End <strong>of</strong> Nature,<br />

and has no such <strong>Essence</strong>s; no comprehensible [or palpable]<br />

Thing enters <strong>the</strong>rein; o<strong>the</strong>rwise it would be a Filling and Darkness,<br />

and that cannot be: Also from Eternity, <strong>the</strong>re has been<br />

nothing else but only <strong>the</strong> Source [or working Property] where
