[or yielding Pliableness,] <strong>the</strong> Taste <strong>of</strong> Joy, <strong>the</strong> Welldoing <strong>of</strong><br />
Meekness [or Affability,] and [fur<strong>the</strong>r] what my Pen cannot<br />
express. The Mind would much ra<strong>the</strong>r be freed from Vanity,<br />
and live <strong>the</strong>rein without Molestation or Disturbance.<br />
9. Now <strong>the</strong>se two Gates are in one ano<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>the</strong> ne<strong>the</strong>rmost<br />
goes into <strong>the</strong> Abyss, and <strong>the</strong> uppermost goes into Paradise; and<br />
a third Gate comes to <strong>the</strong>se two, out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Element with its four<br />
Productions, and presses in toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> Fire, Air, Water,<br />
and Earth; and <strong>the</strong>ir Kingdom is <strong>the</strong> Sun and Stars, which<br />
m qualify with <strong>the</strong> first Will; and <strong>the</strong>ir Desire is to be filled, to<br />
swell, and to be great. These draw into <strong>the</strong>m, and fill <strong>the</strong> Chamber<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deep, [viz.] <strong>the</strong> free and naked Will in <strong>the</strong> Mind;<br />
<strong>the</strong>y bring <strong>the</strong> Glimpse [or Glance] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stars into <strong>the</strong> Gate <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Mind, and qualify with <strong>the</strong> Sharpness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Glimpse [or<br />
Flash;] <strong>the</strong>y fill <strong>the</strong> broken Gates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Darkness with Flesh,<br />
and wrestle continually with <strong>the</strong> first Will (from whence <strong>the</strong>y are<br />
gone forth) for <strong>the</strong> Kingdom [or Dominion,] and yield <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />
up to <strong>the</strong> first Will, as to <strong>the</strong>ir Fa<strong>the</strong>r, which willingly<br />
receives <strong>the</strong>ir Region [or Dominion.] For he is obscure and<br />
dark, and <strong>the</strong>y are rough and sour, also bitter and cold; and<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir Life is a seething Source <strong>of</strong> Fire, wherewith <strong>the</strong>y govern<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Mind, in <strong>the</strong> Gall, Heart, Lungs, and Liver, and in all<br />
Members [or Parts] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole Body, and Man is n <strong>the</strong>ir own;<br />
<strong>the</strong> Spirit which stands in <strong>the</strong> Flash brings <strong>the</strong> Constellation<br />
into <strong>the</strong> Tincture <strong>of</strong> its Property, and infects <strong>the</strong> Thoughts, according<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Dominion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stars; <strong>the</strong>y take <strong>the</strong> Body and<br />
tame it, and bring <strong>the</strong>ir bitter Roughness into it.<br />
m Or mingle.<br />
n The four Elements own.<br />
10. Now <strong>the</strong> Gate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light stands between both <strong>the</strong>se<br />
Regions, as in one [only] Center inclosed with Flesh, and it<br />
shines in <strong>the</strong> Darkness in itself, and it moves towards <strong>the</strong> Might<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Darkness and Fierceness, and sheds forth its Rays, even<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Noise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Breaking through, from whence <strong>the</strong> Gates <strong>of</strong><br />
Seeing, Hearing, Smelling, Tasting, and Feeling, go forth; and<br />
when <strong>the</strong>se Gates apprehend <strong>the</strong> sweet, loving, and pleasant Rays<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y become most highly joyful, and run<br />
into <strong>the</strong>ir highest Region into <strong>the</strong> Heart (as into <strong>the</strong>ir right<br />
Dwellinghouse) into <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul,<br />
which receives it with Joy, and refreshes itself <strong>the</strong>rein; and<br />
<strong>the</strong>re its Sun springs up (viz. <strong>the</strong> pleasant Tincture in <strong>the</strong> o Element<br />
<strong>of</strong> Water) and by <strong>the</strong> sweet Joy becomes Blood. For all<br />
Regions rejoice <strong>the</strong>rein, and suppose that <strong>the</strong>y have got <strong>the</strong> noble<br />
Virgin again, whereas it is but her Rays, as <strong>the</strong> Sun shines upon<br />
<strong>the</strong> Earth, from whence all <strong>Essence</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth rejoice, spring,<br />
grow, and blossom. Which is <strong>the</strong> Cause that <strong>the</strong> Tincture rises<br />
up in all Herbs and Trees.
