first) is shut up fast, and hangs but to it, in which <strong>the</strong> Soul is<br />

tempted and afflicted by <strong>the</strong> Devil; and on <strong>the</strong> contrary, <strong>the</strong><br />

p Virgin (which belongs to [and is in] <strong>the</strong> Tincture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Regeneration,<br />

and in <strong>the</strong> Departure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Body from <strong>the</strong> Soul, shall<br />

dwell [in <strong>the</strong> same Tincture,]) is in continual Strife and Combat<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Devil, and tramples upon his Head in <strong>the</strong> Virtue [and<br />

Power] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> [Sours] Prince and q Champion, (viz. <strong>the</strong> Son <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Virgin,) when a new Body (out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Virtue [or Power] <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Soul) shall r spring forth in <strong>the</strong> Tincture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul.<br />

13. And that (when <strong>the</strong> Soul is s departed from <strong>the</strong> Body) it<br />

might no more possibly be tempted by <strong>the</strong> Devil and <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong><br />

this World; <strong>the</strong>re is a quiet Rest for <strong>the</strong> Soul included in its Center<br />

in its own Tincture, which stands in Paradise, betwixt <strong>the</strong><br />

Kingdom <strong>of</strong> this World and <strong>the</strong> Kingdom <strong>of</strong> Hell, to continue<br />

until God shall put this World into its t E<strong>the</strong>r, when <strong>the</strong> Number<br />

<strong>of</strong> Men, and Figures (according to <strong>the</strong> Depth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eternal Mind<br />

<strong>of</strong> God) shall be finished.<br />

14. And now when we consider how <strong>the</strong> temporary and transitory<br />

Life is generated, we find that <strong>the</strong> Soul is a Cause <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />

u Members [or Faculties] <strong>of</strong> [or to] <strong>the</strong> Life <strong>of</strong> Man, and without<br />

it <strong>the</strong>re would not be one Member [to, or] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life <strong>of</strong><br />

Man generated. For when we search [into] <strong>the</strong> Beginning and<br />

Kindling <strong>of</strong> Life, we find strongly with clear Evidences all Manner<br />

<strong>of</strong> [Faculties or] Members; so that when <strong>the</strong> clear Light <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Soul kindles, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Fiat stands in very great Joy, and in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Twinkling <strong>of</strong> an Eye does in <strong>the</strong> Matrix separate <strong>the</strong> Pure<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Impure, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> Tincture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul in <strong>the</strong> Light<br />

is <strong>the</strong> x Worker, which <strong>the</strong>re renews it, but <strong>the</strong> Fiat creates it.<br />

15. And now when <strong>the</strong> [sour] harsh Matrix is [made so very<br />

humble, thin, and sweet, by <strong>the</strong> Light, <strong>the</strong> [stern or] strong Horror<br />

(which was so very poisonous before <strong>the</strong> Light [kindled])<br />

flies upward; for it is terrified at <strong>the</strong> Meekness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Matrix;<br />

and it is a Terror <strong>of</strong> great Joy, yet it retains its strong [or<br />

stern] Right [or Property,] and cannot be changed; nei<strong>the</strong>r can<br />

it get far from <strong>the</strong>nce (for it is withheld by <strong>the</strong> Fiat) but it raises<br />

itself suddenly al<strong>of</strong>t, and <strong>the</strong> Terror makes it a Film from <strong>the</strong><br />

[sour or] harsh Fiat which holds <strong>the</strong> Terror fast, and that is now<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gall y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heart.<br />

<strong>16</strong>. But when <strong>the</strong> Matrix (from which <strong>the</strong> Terror was gone
