45. Thus <strong>the</strong> evil Child pants after <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r, and would get<br />
to be in <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> Element, and yet cannot reach her.<br />
But in Adam that [Child] did perceive <strong>the</strong> Element; and <strong>the</strong>reupon<br />
<strong>the</strong> four Elements have drawn Adam to <strong>the</strong>m, and supposed<br />
<strong>the</strong>n that <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r; because <strong>the</strong> Virgin <strong>the</strong>re showed<br />
herself in <strong>the</strong> living Spirit <strong>of</strong> Adam.<br />
46. Hereupon now <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stars and Elements would<br />
continually [get] again into <strong>the</strong> Element; for in <strong>the</strong> Element<br />
<strong>the</strong>re is Meekness and Rest; and in <strong>the</strong> c Kindling <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>re<br />
is mere Enmity and contrary Will, and <strong>the</strong> Devil rules also <strong>the</strong>rein;<br />
and <strong>the</strong>y would fain be released from that abominable and<br />
evil Guest, and <strong>the</strong>y seek with great Anxiety after d Deliverance,<br />
z The Element.<br />
a Pleasant.<br />
b Coagulated.<br />
c Viz. in <strong>the</strong> four Elements.<br />
d The Dissolution.<br />
as Paul says; All Creatures groan toge<strong>the</strong>r with us, to be freed<br />
from Vanity.<br />
47. Then says <strong>the</strong> Mind; Why does God let it move so long in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Anxiety? Alas! when will it be that I shall see <strong>the</strong> Virgin?<br />
Hearken, thou noble and highly worthy Mind, it must all enter in,<br />
[and serve] to <strong>the</strong> Glory <strong>of</strong> God, and praise God; as it is written,<br />
All Tongues shall praise God; let it pass till <strong>the</strong> Number to <strong>the</strong><br />
Praise <strong>of</strong> God be full, according to <strong>the</strong> eternal Mind.<br />
48. Thou wilt say, How great is that [Number] <strong>the</strong>n? Behold,<br />
tell <strong>the</strong> Stars in <strong>the</strong> Firmament; tell <strong>the</strong> Trees, <strong>the</strong> Herbs, and<br />
every [Spire <strong>of</strong>] Grass, if thou canst; so great is <strong>the</strong> Number that<br />
shall enter in, to <strong>the</strong> Glory and Honour <strong>of</strong> God. For in <strong>the</strong> End<br />
all Stars pass again into <strong>the</strong> Element, into <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r; and <strong>the</strong>re<br />
it shall appear, how much good <strong>the</strong>y have brought forth here by<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir Working. For <strong>the</strong> Shadow and <strong>the</strong> Image <strong>of</strong> every [Thing<br />
or] Substance shall appear before God, in <strong>the</strong> Element, and stand<br />
eternally; in <strong>the</strong> same thou shalt have great Joy, thou shalt see all<br />
thy Works <strong>the</strong>rein; also all <strong>the</strong> Afflictions thou hast suffered, <strong>the</strong>y<br />
shall be altoge<strong>the</strong>r changed into great Joy, and shall refresh <strong>the</strong>e<br />
indeed; wait but upon <strong>the</strong> L O R D; <strong>the</strong> Spirit intimates, that<br />
when <strong>the</strong> Time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lily is e expired, <strong>the</strong>n this shall be done.<br />
49. Therefore it is that God keeps it hidden so long (as to our<br />
Sight) that <strong>the</strong> Number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Glory <strong>of</strong> his Kingdom may be<br />
great; but before it is but as <strong>the</strong> Twinkling <strong>of</strong> an Eye. Have but<br />
Patience, this World will most certainly be dissolved, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
with <strong>the</strong> Fierceness which must abide in <strong>the</strong> first Principle; <strong>the</strong>refore<br />
do thou beware <strong>of</strong> that.
