Mo<strong>the</strong>r Eve are got into, in which <strong>the</strong>y supposed <strong>the</strong>y should be<br />
wise when <strong>the</strong>y should wear all <strong>the</strong> three <strong>Principles</strong> manifested<br />
in <strong>the</strong>m; if <strong>the</strong>y had ra<strong>the</strong>r worn two hidden in <strong>the</strong>m, and had<br />
stayed in <strong>the</strong> c one, it had been good for us, <strong>of</strong> which fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />
about <strong>the</strong> Fall.<br />
29. Thus now in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong> <strong>of</strong> all <strong>Essence</strong>s, <strong>the</strong>re are three<br />
several distinct Properties, which yet are not parted asunder, with<br />
one Source [or Property] far from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r; but <strong>the</strong>y are in<br />
one ano<strong>the</strong>r as one only <strong>Essence</strong>, and yet <strong>the</strong> one does not comprehend<br />
<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. As <strong>the</strong>se three Elements, Fire, Air, Water,<br />
are all three in one ano<strong>the</strong>r, and nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m comprehends<br />
<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r; and as one Element generates ano<strong>the</strong>r, and yet is not<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong> nor Source [or Property] <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>; so <strong>the</strong> three<br />
<strong>Principles</strong> are in one ano<strong>the</strong>r, and one generates <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, and<br />
yet no one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m all comprehends <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, and none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />
is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong> [or Substance] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
The Depth in <strong>the</strong> Center [or Ground.]<br />
30. As has been <strong>of</strong>ten mentioned, God is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Essence</strong> <strong>of</strong> all<br />
<strong>Essence</strong>s, wherein <strong>the</strong>re are two <strong>Essence</strong>s in one, without End,<br />
and without Original; viz. <strong>the</strong> eternal Light, that is, God, or <strong>the</strong><br />
Good; and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> eternal Darkness, that is, <strong>the</strong> d Source; and<br />
yet <strong>the</strong>re would be no Source in it if <strong>the</strong> Light was not. The<br />
Light causes that <strong>the</strong> Darkness longs after [or is in Anguish for]<br />
<strong>the</strong> Light, and this Anguish is <strong>the</strong> Source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wrath <strong>of</strong> God<br />
(or <strong>the</strong> hellish Fire) wherein <strong>the</strong> Devils dwell: From whence<br />
God also calls himself an angry, zealous [or jealous] God. These<br />
are <strong>the</strong> two Principals, <strong>the</strong> Original <strong>of</strong> which we know nothing<br />
<strong>of</strong>, only we know <strong>the</strong> e Birth <strong>the</strong>rein, <strong>the</strong> indissoluble Band, which<br />
is as follows.<br />
31. In <strong>the</strong> Originality <strong>of</strong> Darkness, <strong>the</strong>re is f Harshness and<br />
c In <strong>the</strong> Principle <strong>of</strong> Light.<br />
d The Nature or <strong>the</strong> working Property.<br />
e Or working Activity.<br />
f Sourness, Tartness, Sharpness, Astringency, or Attraction.<br />
Austereness, this Harshness causes that it be light; for Harshness<br />
is Desirousness, an Attracting; and that is <strong>the</strong> first Ground<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Willing [or Longing] after <strong>the</strong> Light, and yet it is not<br />
possible to comprehend it; and <strong>the</strong> Attracting in <strong>the</strong> Will is <strong>the</strong><br />
[Sting or] Prickle, which <strong>the</strong> Desiring attracts, and <strong>the</strong> first<br />
Stirring [or Moving.] Now <strong>the</strong> Prickle cannot endure <strong>the</strong><br />
Attracting in <strong>the</strong> Will, but resists, flies up, and yet cannot get<br />
away from <strong>the</strong>nce; for it is generated in <strong>the</strong> Attracting. But<br />
because it cannot remove from <strong>the</strong>nce, nor can endure <strong>the</strong> Attracting,<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong>re is a great Anguish, a Desiring [or Longing]<br />
after <strong>the</strong> Light, like a Furiousness, and like a breaking whirling
