and is <strong>the</strong> Habitation <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>. Therefore, O Man! whatsoever<br />

you sow here, that you shall reap, for your Soul in <strong>the</strong> Tincture<br />

remains eternally: And all your Fruits stand in <strong>the</strong> Tincture,<br />

manifested in <strong>the</strong> clear Light, and follow after you; this <strong>the</strong><br />

Virgin says in Sincerity [for a Warning,] with great Longing<br />

after <strong>the</strong> Lily.<br />

46. And now if we consider <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tincture, [and search]<br />

how various it is, and [that it is] many Times so wholly false;<br />

<strong>the</strong>n we may [be able] fundamentally to demonstrate <strong>the</strong> Falsehood<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many various Spirits, [and] how <strong>the</strong>y are generated.<br />

Therefore we will make a short Entrance, concerning <strong>the</strong> Propagation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, which we will enlarge [when we speak]<br />

about <strong>the</strong> Fall <strong>of</strong> Adam, and <strong>the</strong> Birth <strong>of</strong> Cain. For <strong>the</strong> Seed<br />

(as is abovementioned) is sown in <strong>the</strong> Lust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tinctures,<br />

where <strong>the</strong> sour [or] harsh Fiat receives it, and supposes that it<br />

has received <strong>the</strong> Virgin; <strong>the</strong>re both <strong>the</strong> Tinctures (<strong>the</strong> masculine<br />

and <strong>the</strong> feminine) <strong>the</strong>n strive toge<strong>the</strong>r about it, and <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong><br />

Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great World, viz. <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stars and Elements,<br />

figures [images or imprints] itself also in it, and he fills<br />

u Images or represents himself.<br />

x That <strong>the</strong> Soul listens and yields to <strong>the</strong> Devil.<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tinctures with his Elements, which <strong>the</strong> Tinctures in <strong>the</strong> Fiat<br />

receive with great Joy, and suppose <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong> Virgin.<br />

47. But seeing <strong>the</strong> Fiat is <strong>the</strong> mightiest among <strong>the</strong>m all, (for<br />

it is as it were a Spirit, and although it be no Spirit, yet it is <strong>the</strong><br />

sharp <strong>Essence</strong>,) <strong>the</strong>refore it attracts <strong>the</strong> Seed to it, and desires<br />

<strong>the</strong> Limbus <strong>of</strong> God in Paradise, out <strong>of</strong> which Adam’s Body was<br />

created by <strong>the</strong> Fiat, and y would create an Adam out <strong>of</strong> a heavenly<br />

Limbus; and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great World insinuates himself<br />

and supposes, [and says,] <strong>the</strong> Child is mine, I will rule in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Virgin; and he always fills it with <strong>the</strong> Elements, from whence<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tincture becomes full and very thick, [gross, swelled, or impregnated;]<br />

and <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Tincture gets a Loathing against<br />

<strong>the</strong> Fulness; for <strong>the</strong> Tincture itself is clear, and <strong>the</strong> Fiat with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Elements is thick, [gross and] swelled; from whence Women<br />

(when <strong>the</strong>y z grow big [with Child]) know well enough, that<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m loa<strong>the</strong> some Meats and Drinks; and long, still after<br />

some strange Thing [to eat], for <strong>the</strong> Tincture comes to have a<br />

Loathing <strong>of</strong> all that <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> this World with his Elements<br />

fills in, and wills to have somewhat else; for this Virgin does not<br />

relish <strong>the</strong>m, but becomes [discontented and] sorry, and forsakes<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, and goes into her a E<strong>the</strong>r, and comes not again.<br />

48. And <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sun, Stars, and Elements <strong>of</strong><br />

this World, supposes with itself [saying,] Now thou art in <strong>the</strong><br />

right, <strong>the</strong> Child is thine, <strong>the</strong> Foundation is laid, thou wilt bring<br />

it up, <strong>the</strong> Virgin must be thine, thou wilt live <strong>the</strong>rein, and have
