EV = Equivalence Value for the renewable fuel.<br />
R = <strong>Renewable</strong> content <strong>of</strong> the renewable fuel. This is a measure <strong>of</strong> the portion <strong>of</strong> a<br />
renewable fuel that came from a renewable source, expressed as a percent, on an<br />
energy basis, <strong>of</strong> the renewable fuel that comes from a renewable feedstock.<br />
EC = Energy content <strong>of</strong> the renewable fuel, in Btu per gallon (lower heating value)<br />
(b) Technical justification <strong>and</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> calculation <strong>of</strong> the Equivalence Value.<br />
(1) Producers <strong>of</strong> renewable fuels must prepare a technical justification <strong>of</strong> the<br />
calculation <strong>of</strong> the Equivalence Value for the renewable fuel including a<br />
description <strong>of</strong> the renewable fuel, its feedstock <strong>and</strong> production process.<br />
(2) Producers shall submit the justification to the EPA for approval.<br />
(3) The Agency will review the technical justification <strong>and</strong> assign an appropriate<br />
Equivalence Value to the renewable fuel based on the procedure in paragraph (c)<br />
<strong>of</strong> this section.<br />
(c) The equivalence value is assigned as follows:<br />
(1) A value rounded to the nearest tenth if such value is less than 0.9.<br />
(2) 1.0 if the calculated equivalence value is in the range <strong>of</strong> 0.9 to 1.2.<br />
(3) 1.3, 1.5, or 1.7, for calculated values over 1.2, whichever value is closest to the<br />
calculated equivalence value, based on the positive difference between the<br />
calculated equivalence value <strong>and</strong> each <strong>of</strong> these three values, except as specified in<br />
paragraphs (c)(4) <strong>and</strong> (c)(5) <strong>of</strong> this section.<br />
(4) 2.5 for cellulosic biomass ethanol that is produced on or before December 31,<br />
2012.<br />
(5) 2.5 for waste derived ethanol.<br />
(d) Equivalence values for some renewable fuels are as given in the following table:<br />
