Grade 11, Job Shadow 1: Introduction to Job Shadow<br />

Standard Job Shadow Experience<br />

Students are responsible for the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Mak<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>itial call to set up the visit<br />

• Mak<strong>in</strong>g a follow-up call to confirm the visit<br />

• Obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g written parent permission prior to the visit<br />

• Arrang<strong>in</strong>g transportation to and from the workplace<br />

• Notify<strong>in</strong>g teachers of absence and mak<strong>in</strong>g up missed work<br />

• Secur<strong>in</strong>g a written evaluation from the employer, to be mailed to the RTS Facilitator with<br />

a signature across the sealed flap of the envelope. (Alternatively, schools may to choose<br />

to accept company letterhead or a bus<strong>in</strong>ess card as evidence of a visit, along with a<br />

student-delivered evaluation from the employer.)<br />

Companies are responsible for the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Provid<strong>in</strong>g a liaison who will direct the student’s activities while <strong>in</strong> the workplace and<br />

complete the written evaluation at the end of the visit.<br />

• Provid<strong>in</strong>g a safe environment for the student’s visit.<br />

• Communicat<strong>in</strong>g problems to the RTS Facilitator <strong>in</strong> a timely manner.<br />

• Provid<strong>in</strong>g appropriate access to work activities, plann<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>gs, etc.<br />

• Allow<strong>in</strong>g time (at least 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes) for the student to conduct an <strong>in</strong>formational <strong>in</strong>terview<br />

with one of the company employees, preferably the person assigned as the liaison.<br />

The school is responsible for:<br />

• Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ducements for students to participate, for example, mak<strong>in</strong>g the Job Shadow<br />

visit a course requirement.<br />

• Offer<strong>in</strong>g the missed time as an “excused absence” where appropriate documentation<br />

is provided.<br />

• With the RTS facilitator, cultivat<strong>in</strong>g relationships with local employers that enable stu-<br />

dents to connect with appropriate workplaces. For maximum effectiveness, this process<br />

should beg<strong>in</strong> when the RTS program is <strong>in</strong>stituted <strong>in</strong> grade 9.<br />

The RTS Facilitator is responsible for:<br />

• Track<strong>in</strong>g permission slips and employer evaluations.<br />

• Provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>struction re: contact<strong>in</strong>g employers and sett<strong>in</strong>g up Job Shadow opportunities.<br />

• Describ<strong>in</strong>g workplace expectations.<br />

• Assist<strong>in</strong>g students <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formational <strong>in</strong>terviews.<br />
