OVERVIEW ...........................................................................................<br />

In this lesson, students beg<strong>in</strong> by review<strong>in</strong>g a few disputes between tenants and landlords and<br />

describe how one might be resolved. Next, they discuss the importance of a lease, review a<br />

sample lease, and underl<strong>in</strong>e and review new or confus<strong>in</strong>g terms. Then, they complete a chart<br />

show<strong>in</strong>g how a lease protects both the landlord and the tenant. Next, they use the lease to com-<br />

plete a quiz about the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords. F<strong>in</strong>ally, they review<br />

where to go for help to resolve a dispute with a landlord.<br />

Evict: to force a tenant to leave the premises for not follow<strong>in</strong>g rules of lease or for not pay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

rent.<br />

Landlord: the person that owns a property that is rented out.<br />

Lease: a written agreement between a landlord and a tenant stat<strong>in</strong>g the terms under which a<br />

property will be rented.<br />

Rent: regular payment from a tenant to a landlord to live <strong>in</strong> a property.<br />

Tenant: the person who rents and lives <strong>in</strong> a property.<br />

Utility: a service such as gas, electric, or phone.<br />
