Grade 11, Education After High School #: 1: Choos<strong>in</strong>g Lesson Title Courses for Senior Year<br />

OVERVIEW ...........................................................................................<br />

In this lesson, students beg<strong>in</strong> to select courses for their senior year. They first record the classes<br />

they will have completed by the end of junior year. Then they review three important criteria for<br />

select<strong>in</strong>g classes: state or district requirements for graduation; courses that help them prepare<br />

for specific careers and explore their <strong>in</strong>terests; and requirements or recommendations for col-<br />

lege-bound students. Next, they use a list<strong>in</strong>g of course offer<strong>in</strong>gs to select options for next year.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, they complete a list of questions for their school counselor regard<strong>in</strong>g their f<strong>in</strong>al selec-<br />

tions. Some schools may elect to use this class for official course selection by <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g the school<br />

counselor to co-facilitate.<br />

PREPARATION ....................................................................................<br />

❑ This lesson is designed to help students prepare for their meet<strong>in</strong>gs with the school counselor<br />

to select courses for the 12th grade. Be sure to coord<strong>in</strong>ate with the counselor to become<br />

better acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with the processes <strong>in</strong>volved. If possible, <strong>in</strong>vite your school counselor to<br />

serve as a co-facilitator of this lesson. Hav<strong>in</strong>g him/her present will be <strong>in</strong>credibly valuable <strong>in</strong><br />

answer<strong>in</strong>g students’ specific questions.<br />

❑ You will need to contact local school officials well <strong>in</strong> advance of this lesson to identify and<br />

assemble necessary <strong>in</strong>formation and forms for your district’s course selection process (juniors<br />

choos<strong>in</strong>g courses for their senior year). This packet of <strong>in</strong>formation should <strong>in</strong>clude: district or<br />

state requirements for graduation, a list<strong>in</strong>g of senior year courses, the course selection card<br />

or form, and any other <strong>in</strong>formation needed to help students and their parents understand<br />

the senior year course selection process.<br />

❑ Ask your school counselor if it’s possible to access a copy of each student’s transcript so stu-<br />

dents don’t have to guess regard<strong>in</strong>g the number of credits they’ve accumulated.<br />

❑ List the day’s BIG IDEA and activities on the board.<br />

❑ Write the day’s vocabulary word and def<strong>in</strong>ition on the board.<br />

❑ The follow<strong>in</strong>g handouts need to be made <strong>in</strong>to overhead transparencies or copied onto chart<br />

paper:<br />
