OVERVIEW ...........................................................................................<br />

In this lesson, students discuss the importance and process of evaluat<strong>in</strong>g one- and two-year pro-<br />

grams, such as community, technical, and career colleges. They beg<strong>in</strong> by writ<strong>in</strong>g three questions<br />

they would have about one of these programs. Then they discuss the importance of accredita-<br />

tion, and questions to ask when evaluat<strong>in</strong>g a school or program. Next, they choose a career<br />

from a list and use <strong>College</strong>In<strong>Colorado</strong>.org and the Web to research two schools that offer tra<strong>in</strong>-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> that career. F<strong>in</strong>ally, they discuss the challenges they faced and further options for f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the <strong>in</strong>formation they need.<br />

PREPARATION ....................................................................................<br />

❑ Make arrangements for the class to use the computer lab, and make sure <strong>College</strong>InColo-<br />

rado.org (or similar website) is accessible from students’ computers.<br />

❑ List the day’s BIG IDEA and activities on the board.<br />

❑ Write the day’s vocabulary words and def<strong>in</strong>itions on the board.<br />

❑ The follow<strong>in</strong>g handout needs to be made <strong>in</strong>to overhead transparencies or copied onto<br />

chart paper:<br />

• Student Handbook page 137-138, School Research<br />

❑ For Activity III, Item 5, review the website of a community college or tech/trade school <strong>in</strong><br />

your area.<br />

❑ The follow<strong>in</strong>g websites will provide helpful background <strong>in</strong>formation when prepar<strong>in</strong>g<br />
