Grade 11, Money Matters 4: Pay<strong>in</strong>g for a Car<br />

ACTIVITY STEPS ..................................................................................<br />

I. Warm Up (5 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

1. [Refer students to Student Handbook page 168, Expenses After High School. In this<br />

activity, they will imag<strong>in</strong>e where they’ll be after graduation, predict who will pay different<br />

expenses, and predict whether or not they will be able to afford the car they<br />

selected <strong>in</strong> last week’s lesson.]<br />

2. SAY SOMETHING LIKE: Welcome back, everyone. This week we’re go<strong>in</strong>g to cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

the subject of buy<strong>in</strong>g cars. Last week you researched a car that would fit your needs<br />

(or desires!) after high school. This week, you’ll be figur<strong>in</strong>g out if you can afford that<br />

car given a certa<strong>in</strong> budget. We’re also go<strong>in</strong>g to talk about car loans and briefly discuss<br />

car <strong>in</strong>surance.<br />

3. [Briefly discuss Student Handbook page 168, Expenses After High School. Invite<br />

students to share what they predict will be their three biggest expenses. Then ask for a<br />

show of hands from those who predict they’ll be able to afford the car they chose last<br />

week. How many don’t th<strong>in</strong>k they’ll be able to afford it?]<br />

II. What Can You Spend? (15 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

1. SAY SOMETHING LIKE: Let’s say you’ve researched the car you want to buy, you<br />

found one for a good price, you’ve taken it for a test drive, and you’ve pretty much<br />

fallen <strong>in</strong> love with it. But when you f<strong>in</strong>d out how much your car payment will be, you<br />

realize you wouldn’t be able to pay your rent! This is why it’s so important to figure<br />

out what you can afford before you go car shopp<strong>in</strong>g. So let’s give ourselves a sample<br />

budget and see what we can afford.<br />

2. [Have students turn to Student Handbook page 169, What’s Your Car Budget? and<br />

show an overhead of this page. Expla<strong>in</strong> that <strong>in</strong> this activity, they will return to last<br />

week’s scenario <strong>in</strong> which they’re about to start their freshman year <strong>in</strong> college and need<br />

a car to commute to school. Depend<strong>in</strong>g on their math proficiency, you could have students<br />

work <strong>in</strong>dividually, <strong>in</strong> pairs, or walk through the worksheet calculations as a class.]<br />

3. [Briefly review the “car budget” they calculated on the overhead. Everyone should end<br />

up with a car budget of $300.]<br />

4. SAY SOMETHING LIKE: Now, you might be th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, $300 is a lot of money. Do I really<br />

want to spend it on a car? Do I really need a car? These are the questions you<br />
