6. [Model the k<strong>in</strong>ds of questions you can ask, po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g out that it’s okay to ask questions<br />

about the employee’s personal experience. Read aloud and po<strong>in</strong>t to the category:<br />

“What I Need to Do to Get a Job <strong>in</strong> this Field.”]<br />

SAY SOMETHING LIKE: Rather than ask<strong>in</strong>g the generic question, “What do I need to<br />

do to get a job <strong>in</strong> this field?,” the <strong>in</strong>formational <strong>in</strong>terview is a perfect opportunity to<br />

ask a person work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the career about his or her personal experiences. People enjoy<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g about themselves and shar<strong>in</strong>g their successes. What are some questions you<br />

could ask to get this conversation started? [Students respond.]<br />

7. [When students f<strong>in</strong>ish writ<strong>in</strong>g questions for each category, br<strong>in</strong>g the class back together.<br />

Invite students to share questions <strong>in</strong> each category, and use their responses to<br />

create a class list of best questions to ask on an <strong>in</strong>formational <strong>in</strong>terview.]<br />

IV. Wrap Up: If the Job Fits… (5 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />

1. SAY SOMETHING LIKE: “Informational <strong>in</strong>terview” is a term created by the Richard<br />

Nelson Bolles, author of the best-sell<strong>in</strong>g career book What Color is Your Parachute?<br />

Bolles describes the process of <strong>in</strong>formational <strong>in</strong>terviews as “try<strong>in</strong>g on jobs to see if they<br />

fit you.” What do you th<strong>in</strong>k Bolles means?<br />

2. [Have students discuss their ideas about the quotation. If the follow<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t does not<br />

come out of their responses, be sure they understand that meet<strong>in</strong>g with, and ask<strong>in</strong>g<br />

questions of, people work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> careers of <strong>in</strong>terest enables them to see if the job is one<br />

that best “fits” their needs, <strong>in</strong>terests, abilities, etc.]<br />

3. SAY SOMETHING LIKE: Great job today! Next week, you will research the companies<br />

you’ll be visit<strong>in</strong>g and practice <strong>in</strong>formational <strong>in</strong>terviews with a partner.<br />
