The main tasks are :
• Breeding of fruit trees : pomes (apple, pear, quince), stone (European plum, peach, apricot, sour and sweet cherries,
almond), and nut (walnut, hazelnut) temperate and other species for the variable agroclimatic resources of Moldova;
• provide maintenance and sustainable use of fruit trees species for the studies or adaptability and plasticity of
genotypes within main and specific characters;
• Perform DUS testing of new cultivars bred in Moldova.
The Experimental National collection holds 3035 varieties and 14928 hybrids, obtained from different types of
hybridization, including diallelic ones.
During the last 5 years there have been 22 new varieties created and registered; according to agronomic, biological and
economic parameters 57 varieties were selected and 56 hybrids evaluated.
