Findings summary
Appendix 4.4
Early, abrupt cessation of breastfeeding by
HIV-infected women in a low-resource
setting, such as Lusaka, Zambia, did not
improve the rate of HIV-free survival among
children born to HIV-infected mothers and
was harmful to HIV-infected infants.
Similar mortality rates during the first 2
years of life. However, HIV-1-free survival at
2 years was significantly higher in the
formula arm.
Mortality among mothers was higher in the
breastfeeding group than in the formula
group. There was an association between
maternal death and subsequent infant
death.
What are the effects of different models of delivery for improving maternal and infant health outcomes for poor people in urban areas in low income
and lower middle income countries?
