convincing evidence <strong>for</strong> significant impact on early neonatal mortality rates.<br />

The final successful intervention addressing maternal mortality involved a change<br />

to service intervention in Senegal (Dumont et al., 2005), and it is worth noting that<br />

it referred to the same setting as that in Dumont et al. (2006) in Table 4.1,<br />

namely, the introduction of routine audits of maternal deaths as a tool to improve<br />

service delivery, underlining the importance of facility-based quality improvement<br />

measures. MDR does appear to be another relatively low cost and high impact<br />

intervention.<br />
