book. As you’ll see, some are
professionals, but others are
novices or hobbyists. It doesn’t
really matter which is which.
Both of the authors, Robin and
Fil, made some fairly decent
images as amateurs and then
went on to make a (hopefully
very) few terrible ones as professionals.
We are all still learning.
We must help each other.

A bit about our photographic
contributors:
Chris Brearley: I have no
biography. I’m just a QA test
engineer who enjoys taking
photos. Although I tend to prefer
staying in the studio, I’m trying
to get out more and see what is
around me. Page 166, fireworks.
Alesa Dam: Born in 1971,
Belgium, I have been intrigued by
photography since my childhood.
As a child I owned a Kodak
Disc film camera. My father was
interested in photography himself
and had some books about the
subject on the bookshelf. Love,
study, and my first job got in
the way of this hobby in my late
teens and twenties. I regained
interest in photography when
we switched from disposable
film cameras to our first, and
only, digital point-and-shoot
back in 2001. My first DSLR,
bought secondhand in 2009,
opened up a new world full of
creativity. Being more involved in
photography for only 2 years, I’m
not really clear yet what direction
it’s taking me, but it seems my
preferred subjects include longexposure
night photography,
abstracts, and studio portraiture.

Joel DeYoung: Based in
Holland, Michigan, I began my
Acknowledgments
photographic journey in 2006
and found that the challenges
of photography fit well with my
inquisitive personality, my love of
nature, and my need for artistic
expression. Through photography,
I have been able to experience
and explore the world in new
and wonderful ways, finding and
photographing details in nature
that most people overlook. From
the grand landscape to the tiniest
insect, I have found that the world
is full of beauty when you take

John Hartman: John Hartman
is a professional photographer
who has done fine art and
commercial work for more
than 25 years. He works from
a studio in Alexandria, Virginia,
and produces assignment and
stock imagery that is published
in magazines every month. John
is the son of Henry Hartman, a
nationally known illustrator and
fine artist. His long-standing
interest in nautical subjects has
led to collaborations with various
