can be to buy one expensive
trigger for the most distant
light and a handful of cheap
triggers for the lights closer to
the camera.
Disadvantage 2. These
respond to any flash they
see. Any other photographer
present may trigger
our flash. Our flash may be
in the middle of a recycle
exactly when we need it most.
Most photographers tend
to cooperate in this situation
and time their shooting
to give the other guy a
chance at the shot, but this
compromise is not ideal for
anyone and can result in
complete disaster for everyone
when competitors refuse to
cooperate.
Infrared trigger
Technically, we could simply
consider these to be a special
type of light-sensitive trigger,
as infrared is simply another
frequency of light that happens
to be invisible to humans. The
similarity ends there, though:
most infrared triggers are highly
intelligent. They allow both the
camera and the flash to measure
the scene, think about what each
sees from its viewpoint, and
agree with each other about what
the camera is going to do and
what the light is going to do.
These are expensive, but some
of the cost is reduced by not
having to buy a separate device.
The system may be ideal for (1)
absolute novice photographers
who want as much automation
as possible so they don’t
have to spend a lot of study
time and (2) highly experienced
photographers who want the
system to take over a lot of the
The infrared trigger
on this flash
not only triggers
the flash, but it
can communicate
intelligently
with the camera
for remote
power
adjustment.
