Chapter 2: Tools: Now We Have Light,
but How Do We Get It Under Control?
a gOOd <strong>On</strong>line photographic store
will have several thousand tools, and
these sources aren’t the only choice.
Theatrical supply stores have even more.
Still, we’ve already proved that we can
make a good portrait with only one
tiny light and some homemade tools.
Nevertheless, we need to at least put
forth a list of equipment and tools that
each photographer should be aware
of. As your experience grows, you can
pick and choose from these additional
items. We’re not suggesting that you
run out and buy everything described
in this book. In fact, we recommend
you stay minimalist at this point. If you
find yourself thinking you’ve got to have
something that you can’t make yourself,
try renting or borrowing it first. All too
many photographers have bought
something blindly, only to have it gather
dust. Experiment with homemade or
borrowed tools first.
Know that these tools are available.
Over the long term, having a selection
will enable you to work more efficiently
and easily. (And the faster we work, the
more we can charge!) Throughout we’ll
mention options for making many of
these tools yourself for pennies (such
as the softbox and mirror described in
Chapter 1).
