<strong>Teacher</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong> 2012-2013<br />

DRUG FREE WORKPLACE COMMITMENT<br />

PURPOSE: This document is designed to state <strong>Aldine</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>'s commitment to a drug-free<br />

work environment and its expectations of staff in regard to that commitment.<br />

SCOPE: This document encompasses all current and future employees of the <strong>Aldine</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

<strong>District</strong>.<br />

<strong>Aldine</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> is committed to providing its employees with a working environment that<br />

is free from the problems associated with the use and abuse of illegal substances. Non-compliance with the<br />

following statements will carry serious penalties:<br />

I. Any employee using, selling, possessing, distributing, transferring, or manufacturing illegal<br />

substances in any setting and at any time will be in violation of <strong>Aldine</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>'s<br />

employment policy and faces swift and severe disciplinary action and probable dismissal.<br />

II. Any employee convicted of a controlled substance violation or pleading guilty or nolo contendere to<br />

charges of such a violation must inform <strong>Aldine</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> within five (5) days of<br />

such a conviction or plea. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action, which may include<br />

termination from employment for a first offense.<br />

III. Employees needing assistance related to drug or alcohol abuse may contact an area Alcoholics<br />

Anonymous, Palmer Drug Abuse Program, or another program of their choice.<br />

TOBACCO FREE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT<br />

The use of all tobacco products, including but not limited to snuff, dip, chewing tobacco, cigarettes, cigars,<br />

and pipe tobacco, shall be prohibited on <strong>District</strong> property at all times and at functions sponsored by the<br />

district or one of its schools.<br />

Students in violation of this prohibition shall be subject to progressive disciplinary consequences in<br />

accordance with the Discipline Management Plan.<br />

Staff members in violation of this prohibition shall be subject to progressive disciplinary consequences and<br />

shall be afforded opportunities to participate in smoking cessation activities. Repeated violations may result in<br />

dismissal.<br />

Members of the general public in violation of this prohibition shall be subject to consequences ranging from a<br />

verbal warning to removal from the premises for refusal to abide by the prohibition.<br />
