Existing Station Area Characteristics The elevated station platform, south of and parallel to Suitland Parkway, is arranged in a center configuration with one access point connecting to a single mezzanine at ground level. All station area facilities are contained within three Metro-owned parcels totaling 7.6 acres. Station area facilities lie south of the platform and tracks and are bounded by Naylor Road (MD 637) to the west and south and Branch Avenue (MD 5) to the east. Naylor Road Station’s eight bus bays, which wrap around its Kiss & Ride lot, serve 11 Metrobus and TheBus routes. shared between these two facilities with entry/exit points at both Naylor Road and Branch Avenue. The Kiss & Ride lot contains 73 parking spaces, and the 368-space Park & Ride surface lot and its entrance roadway comprise the western half of the station area. Cyclists are accommodated through 10 bicycle racks and four bicycle lockers. Morning and afternoon peaking is very pronounced, with most people entering the station in the morning and exiting in the afternoon— Naylor Road Station is heavily used by commuters traveling into the District. During the general Metrorail systemwide morning peak period (5:00 to 9:30 AM), approximately eight passengers enter the station per every exiting passenger. Conversely, almost four passengers exit the station per every entering passenger during the afternoon systemwide peak period (3:00 to 7:00 PM). Safe and efficient pedestrian access to Naylor Road Station is vital, as almost one in four Metrorail passengers access the station by foot. While the surrounding station area is fairly well connected by sidewalks of varying width and quality, many pedestrian facilities—sidewalks, crosswalks, signals, signage, etc.—in the station area need improvement and could potentially impact pedestrian safety. Nearby roadways, particularly Branch Avenue, serving as major pedestrian links are perceived as dangerous and uninviting for pedestrians, especially when crossing the street. Speeding motorists, missing or narrow sidewalks, missing crosswalks, curb cuts, long signal cycles, sidewalk obstructions, and unpaved pathways were observed along key pedestrian routes. Current demand for bicycle parking at Naylor Road Station is low. Very few passengers bike to Naylor Road Station as a result of limited cycling facilities in the area as well as the station’s location amidst regional commuter roadways with heavy traffic. As with pedestrians, Branch Avenue is perceived as a dangerous place for cyclists as well. No bike lanes, multi-use trails, or designated shared-use roadways are available to Naylor Road Station. However, residential roadways south of the station provide a safe alternative due to low traffic volumes and direct access via Good Hope Avenue. Ten bicycle racks and four bicycle lockers are located near the station entrance. All racks are located west of the station entrance while the lockers are found south of the entrance. Naylor Road Station is served by Metrobus and Prince George’s County’s TheBus. Eleven routes directly serve seven saw-tooth bus bays; an additional unassigned serves as a passenger drop-off location for all routes. With the exception of the two bays closest to Branch Avenue, all bays are located within a counterclockwise bus loop that permits recirculation. Buses access the bus loop from Branch Avenue or Naylor Road, depending on the route.
