The data shows that considerably more people exit the station by bus than enter by bus. This difference can also be seen in the walk and Kiss & Ride modes, as exits by these modes of travel are fewer than entries. Mode shares that significantly vary between entries and exits are atypical. These results are likely due to the small number of completed surveys for Naylor Road Station: 188 and 143 returned surveys with Naylor Road Station as the trip origin and destination, respectively. Despite the results’ uncertainty, it is reasonable to assume that real-world conditions fall somewhere between the access and egress results in Table 4. Pedestrian Safe and efficient pedestrian access to Naylor Road Station is vital, as almost one in four Metrorail passengers access the station by foot. While the surrounding station area is fairly well connected by sidewalks of varying width and quality, many pedestrian facilities—sidewalks, crosswalks, signals, signage, etc.—in the station area need improvement and could potentially impact pedestrian safety. Nearby roadways, particularly Branch Avenue, serving as major pedestrian links are perceived as dangerous and uninviting for pedestrians, especially when crossing the street. The following key observations are the result of several site surveys to evaluate existing pedestrian access: • Large number of pedestrians crossing in the morning and afternoon peak periods • Speeding motorists on Branch Avenue • Missing and narrow sidewalks along Branch Avenue, Oxon Run Drive, and Naylor Road • Curb cuts on east side of Branch Avenue for commercial frontage impede pedestrian access • Sidewalk conditions could be enhanced on Branch Avenue • Traffic signals oriented to automobile traffic and not the pedestrian • No striped crosswalks on Branch Avenue and pedestrian refuge too narrow • Deteriorating street surfaces • Numerous access points, power poles, and signage create obstacles along sidewalks • Several impromptu unpaved paths (desired paths to station area) in the station area These pedestrian safety and connectivity concerns have been echoed in other planning studies, notably the SHA Streetscape Project and M-NCPPC Accessibility Study. Sidewalks Sidewalk coverage of varying width and quality is fairly extensive near Naylor Road Station (Figure 9). However, sidewalks are missing on the most direct pedestrian routes of Branch Avenue, Naylor Road, and Oxon Run Drive, and some sidewalks are not wide enough for pedestrians to pass one another. Because most pedestrians can only access the station by walking along these roadways, a lack of sidewalks, even if only on one side of a roadway, is a significant issue. Sidewalks on Branch Avenue, when present, are narrow and, north of Curtis Drive to the District line, lack a vegetated buffer to separate high-speed traffic. These sidewalks are often poorly maintained. Branch Avenue sidewalks are frequently interrupted by curb cuts that provide vehicle access to aging commercial buildings and increase the number of potential conflict points between vehicles and pedestrians (Figure 10).
