mathematical core in each of our
taught courses is supplemented by
a range of our own modules and
those offered by other departments
and schools.

find employment in financial
services, scientific computation,
decision making support and
government, risk assessment,
statistics, education and other
sectors.
About our Department
We have an international reputation in
many areas such as semi-group theory,
optimisation, probability, applied statistics,
bioinformatics and mathematical biology.
Our staff are strongly committed to
research and to the promotion of graduate
activities. Many are world leaders in
their individual specialisms and their
papers appear in learned journals like
Communications in Algebra, Studia
Logica, SIAM Journal in Optimization, IEEE
Evolutionary Computation, Ecology, Journal
of Mathematical Biology, and Journal of
Statistical Applications in Genetics and
Molecular Biology. Our staff have also
written several well-regarded text books.
We have our own computing laboratories,
and our research students are provided
with their own desktop PCs. We have a
seminar series that runs throughout the
year. Our graduate students are
encouraged to attend these seminars
and to contribute when they are at an
advanced stage in their own research.
In addition, our PhD students are
encouraged to go to external conferences
and, recently, some won a “Best Paper of
the Conference” award.
Being a small department has always been
used to our advantage, as our students
and staff get to know each other better.
We link well with other departments at
Essex in order to create innovative courses,
co-supervise students on projects with
a high mathematical content and undertake
teaching for other departments. Recent
activities in our Department include one
PhD student, Fajriyah Rohmatul, visiting
universities in Indonesia with two academic
members of our staff. This trip was part of
our University’s policy to build partnerships
with overseas universities.

Taught courses
Our MSc courses provide a thorough
and up-to-date training in your specified
area of study. We have strong links with
Essex Business School, our Departments
of Economics and Biological Sciences and
School of Computer Science and Electronic
Engineering, which enables us to offer
courses not readily available elsewhere, like
MSc Mathematics and Finance and MSc
Financial Decision Making with Applications.
In addition, we offer many popular taught
courses with a high statistics content, such
as MSc Statistics and Operational Research
and MSc Statistics and Econometrics. Each
