What are our English
language requirements?
If English is not your first language, we ask
you to provide evidence of your ability to
understand and express yourself in English
for academic purposes. This is important to
ensure that you derive full benefit from your
studies. If you have a score which is less
than two years’ old in an internationally
recognised test, such as IELTS, TOEFL or
Pearson Test of English (Academic), please
supply a copy with your application. If you
do not have a current score, an offer will be
conditional upon achieving one. The score
required will vary by subject (please see
individual subject entries). If you have
successfully completed university-level
studies in the medium of English, you will
not normally be asked for a test score.
You can arrange for your TOEFL test score
to be sent to us by entering our institution
code, 9836, on your examination papers
or the score report request forms.
We implement the following score
equivalents:
IELTS TOEFL Pearson

5.5 68 45
6.0 76 50
6.5 88 60
7.0 100 65
7.5 120 75
We also accept the Cambridge Certificate
of Proficiency in English (CPE), at grade B
or C, depending on your programme of
study. If you have a level of English close
to that required for your course, you may
be able to meet our requirement by
following a pre-sessional course before
the academic year. Details can be found

In addition to our language requirements,
if you are needing a Tier 4 visa, you must
meet the UKBA’s minimum English
language scores if you are using an
English language test to meet our entry
requirements. The minimum requirement is
currently IELTS 5.5 or equivalent in each of
the four language components. More details

How do I apply?
We welcome online applications at:
www.essex.ac.uk/pgapply. Our online
application form takes about 20 minutes
to complete.
With your application, you should provide:
n your personal details;
n academic qualifications that you
already hold or are waiting to complete;
n English language qualifications
(eg IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson); and
n the name and contact details for two
academic or professional referees.
You must also send your ‘supporting
documents’ – we can not process your
application until these have been received.
You can upload copies of documents within
your application form or you can upload
additional documents at a later date, by
returning to our website. Your references
can be sent directly to us.
Supporting documents include:
n transcripts of your university-level
studies to date;
n copies of certificate(s) for any degrees
or other awards that you completed;
n a research proposal (required for
most research degrees); and
n two verifiable references.
You must also
send us your
‘supporting
documents’. We
can not process
your application
until these have
been received.
