At our Colchester
Campus
Approximately 40 acres of our Colchester
Campus are devoted to sport. In addition to
cricket, football, hockey and rugby pitches,
we have tennis courts, a frisbee golf course
and an artificial cricket wicket and nets.
Our floodlit grass training area and
synthetic turf pitch are used for hockey,
plus we have jogging and orienteering
routes around campus.
We have a water sports club at
Brightlingsea and our sub-aqua, swimming
and water polo clubs use the pool at
nearby Colchester Leisure World.
Our indoor facilities include a six badminton
court size multi-purpose sports hall, five
glass-backed squash courts, an indoor
climbing wall, two activity studios (aerobics,
dance, martial arts and yoga) and one
purpose-built five metre high dance studio.
We have a brand new 110-station fitness
and weights room, and all CV machines
have TV and iPod capabilities. Our gym
caters for the novice user to the Olympic
athlete, accommodating all fitness levels.
In 2010-11, we had several notable
successes with our Students’ Union sports
team. This includes the following teams
winning their league: Women’s Football
Men’s 1st, Tennis Women’s 2nd and
Volleyball Men’s 1st. Our Lacrosse Women
and Volleyball Men’s 2nd were runners up
in the South Eastern Conference Cup.
Our Sports Centre is home to the North
Essex Squash Academy and our Human
Performance Unit (HPU) provides sports
science support for sports bursary students
and elite athletes. We also have an HPU
race team that sponsors talented triathletes.
Our Sports Centre runs coaching courses
through our SPACE (Sports Participation
and Coaching Education) programme,
which allow you to gain coaching and
officiating qualifications, as well as feeding
into a number of local organisations to
get hands-on coaching work.
To continue improving sporting performance,
we employ a full-time Sports Development
Officer to target specific clubs and
individuals with the potential to excel.
