Grace Young, Wallington,
Surrey – MSc Cardiac
Rehabilitation ’09
Graduate
profile
I first learnt about cardiac
rehabilitation as an
undergraduate, as one of my
modules looked at clinical
exercise programming which
I found really interesting. I particularly
appreciated being able to use knowledge
on the benefits of healthy lifestyle/exercise
to help patients improve their quality of
life, so decided I wanted to further my
experience of, and education in, this area.
I then chose to study MSc Cardiac
Rehabilitation at Essex because it was
one of only two universities in the UK
offering a course in this subject, as well
as a commutable distance from London.
I had many good experiences at Essex.
There was a lot of variety in my course
and I was given opportunities to learn
new skills, which also helped my personal
development. Particular highlights
were my work-based learning placement,
the time I spent designing a website for
my coursework and the experience of
helping at Fit 4 Life day on campus.
All my lecturers were friendly and
approachable, and I had a really nice
group of fellow students studying
with me.
Since graduating from Essex, I have
begun work as a cardiac research
scientist at Northwick Park Hospital.
My experience of undertaking research,
and my cardiac knowledge from my
MSc Cardiac Rehabilitation, helped
me secure employment in an area
that I would otherwise have
had to have been a nurse to
apply for.
biomechanical mechanisms limiting
performance with special respect to pacing
and fatigue.
Our interest in this area also benefits from
our fruitful collaborations with the Molecular
Biophysics Group of our Department of
Biological Sciences and our Human
Performance Unit, as well as our work with
top athletes and professional clubs, UK
Sports and the British Olympic Association.
Our research on health, exercise and
active life focuses on the environmental
effects on volume and quality of physical
activity in various age groups, looking at
healthy subjects and patients suffering
from various forms of physical and/or
mental handicaps. We include close
collaborations with Essex’s interdisciplinary
Centre for Environment and Society.
We also facilitate successful projects
with primary care trusts, the NHS, local
schools and selected industrial partners,
as well as other health initiatives at our
Colchester Campus.
Research degrees
Our PhD• is a structured three-year
programme of advanced study and
research.
We also offer two other research degrees:
an MPhil•, which is a two year programme,
and an MSD (MSc by dissertation)•, which
is one year.
Research areas
