Funding your studies | www.essex.ac.uk Funding your studies We offer many funding opportunities to support talented postgraduates, ranging from research council studentships and University scholarships to awards funded by charities and other external organisations. Financial liability Before finally confirming your place, we will ask you for an assurance that you have sufficient funds to meet all tuition fees and living expenses. Living expenses The amount of money you require for living expenses (accommodation, food, books, clothing, local travel and entertainment) will vary according to your interests and means. The most up-to-date fees can be found at: www.essex.ac.uk/fees. Our tuition fees include all academic tuition or supervision, use of our Library and IT facilities, registration, initial examination and graduation, and subscription towards the cost of student societies and other social amenities. Fees do not include residence or living costs, or special re-examination fees. Research students in our Department of Biological Sciences may be required to pay ‘bench fees’ for laboratory materials, depending on the area of research. Bench fees will be included with any offer of study. We reserve the right to review the fees chargeable for each academic year. Loyalty discounts We offer our graduates and former study abroad students a ten per discount on your first year of tuition fee. You must be registered for your first postgraduate study period at Essex, following completion of your Bachelors (for Essex graduates) or study abroad programme (for study abroad students), whether it is a taught course or a research degree. Our loyalty discount is Payment of tuition fees Tuition fees can be paid in full at the start of the academic year or in three equal instalments in October, January and April. If you are a non-EEA student requiring our sponsorship for visa applications, you must pay your first instalment as a non-refundable deposit in order to be assigned your CAS. All our other students must pay the first instalment in order to register. We have a discount scheme if you are paying three terms in full, in advance. You will be sent details when your place is confirmed. Payments must all be in Sterling and can be made with credit or debit cards, cheques, cash or bank transfer. Tuition fees for subsequent years of study All fees quoted during your admission process relate to your first year of study only. In any second or subsequent years of study (eg on your research degree or if you are undertaking your Masters part-time), you pay the fee published for the relevant academic year. Our fees are normally published 12 months before the start of our academic year. For example, our fees for 2013-14 should be published by September 2012. As a guide, for 2011-12, we recommend you should have at least £700 per month for living expenses. This applies to single students living in our University-owned accommodation, and allows for an adequate standard of living but does not take account of personal interests, such as sports or hobbies involving special expenses, nor does it include the cost of international travel. If you are accompanied by dependants, costs will be considerably higher. Information on costs will be included in your offer letter and up-to-date information on the cost of living is available at: www.essex.ac.uk/studentfinance.
