Membership,
representation and
participation
All registered students are automatically
members of the SU. We run as a fully
democratic organisation, with over
100 student representatives on various
committees, headed by an elected
Student Executive of twelve. There are
cross-campus elections with hundreds
of positions you can stand for, including
Postgraduate Officer.
Societies
As postgraduates make up a significant
proportion of our student population, our
Postgraduate Students’ Assembly (PGSA)
is here to support you but the SU also has
more than 165 other clubs and societies
covering cultural, religious, political and
academic interests. For a full list, please

Entertainment
We organise a packed programme of
events, most of which take place in Sub
Zero, recently named ‘Best Student Venue
in the UK’. Recent acts include Pendulum,
Calvin Harris, Florence and the Machine,
Zane Lowe, Chase and Status, Paul
Oakenfold, Chris Moyles, Faithless
and Trevor Nelson.
The highlight of the year is our SU Summer
Ball at our Colchester Campus. This is an
all night black tie extravaganza attended
by 3,000 students and featuring live acts,
fairground rides, bars and fireworks.
Facilities at our
Colchester Campus
Our Campus Shop is open seven days a
week, 24 hours a day, and offers produce
from fresh groceries and newspapers to
ready meals and snacks. The Bakery sells
food to take away, while Go Go Global
specialises in international food and drink.
Our Colchester Campus has venues to
suit every taste which include the SU Bar,
with comfy sofas and big screens, Mondo,
offering Italian dishes, and Top Bar, with
pool tables and live music. For those who
like to dance, Sub Zero, our £1.2 million
nightclub, is the place to go.
Facilities at our Southend
Campus
The Union provides a dedicated social
space, so is a great place to grab a drink,
watch films or Sky TV on big screens, or
have a game of pool. Our staff provide
support and access to all services and
activities, including advice, representation,
entertainment, and clubs and societies.
Student activities
We employ around 50 full-time members
of staff and over 380 part-time student
staff. We also have our vTeam, who
co-ordinate voluntary projects in the
community and get you involved. Some
projects have received national recognition
and all are a great way to meet people,
improve your CV and make a difference!
Essex media
The Rabbit is our student newspaper,
published fortnightly during term. It is
a fantastic opportunity for you to get
experience and get your work into print.
RED is our own radio station, while SX:TV
is our award-winning TV channel. Both
are always looking for new students to get
involved, and you do not need experience
as training is provided.
Welfare services
Student life is full of ups and downs, so
we have a free, impartial Advice Centre
to help with any problems. We also run
a security minibus service to transport
you to and from our Colchester Campus
in the evening.
