Shelley Blackaby, Colchester,
Essex – MA Environment,
Science and Society ’11
(now MA/MSc Environmental
Governance)
Can I study part-time?
Most of our taught courses and research
degrees are available part-time to Home
and EU students and those international
students with the necessary immigration
status to do so. A small black circle in the
individual subject entries indicates that
part-time study is available. Tuition fees
are proportionate to the full-time rate.
Part-time study is normally on a half-time
basis, with your programme completed in
twice the duration of the full-time equivalent,
eg 24 months for a Masters. There is no
fixed pattern for the teaching of part-time
study and attendance requirements may
vary in volume and timing, from year to year
and from programme to programme. Several
of our taught courses can be studied on
a modular basis, whereby the total volume
of credit for the award is accumulated over
an extended period (up to six years for a
Masters course). Details are given in our
individual subject entries.
If you wish to study part-time, please state
this clearly on your application.
Disabled students
Applications are considered against the
same academic criteria as those from other
candidates. If you are disabled you should
state this on your application form so that
early consideration can be given to meeting
your accommodation and, where necessary,
daily care requirements. Please write to our
Head of Graduate Admissions, if you would
like additional information before applying
(see also page 36).
Visiting students
Applications for those who do not wish
to gain a degree or other qualification
are made in the same way as those for
graduate programmes. When making an
application, you should indicate the reason
for wishing to study as an visiting student,
and the length of time you wish to spend
at our University. Enquiries should be
addressed to the relevant department,
school or centre. If you are an international
student, you should be aware that visa
restrictions may apply to visiting study.
I wanted to study at a top
university but needed to
be a part-time student
in order to fit my studies
around my full-time job. Essex
gave me this opportunity, while my
optional modules enabled me to fit
lectures around my work commitments.
I have always been interested in
environmental issues and undertook my
undergraduate degree in environmental
planning. However, I wanted to further
this knowledge and what particularly
attracted me to Essex was the
cross-disciplinary nature of my chosen
course. I enjoyed the possibility to learn
from such a diverse range of experts.
While studying, I was working full-time
for Colchester Borough Council in
strategic policy and regeneration and
I have continued working here. My
studies helped me achieve a greater
knowledge of many environmental
issues. I learnt about the scientific,
technical, political, social, economic and
legal aspects involved in environmental
issues and the linkages
between these, which I
apply on a daily basis to
my career as a planner.
