There are 3 types of the recreation areas in Latvia: coastal, hilly lakelands,<br />
river valleys.<br />
Today tourism and recreation resources in Latvia are used very uneven. The<br />
most popular tourist areas are Old Riga, historical centre of Riga, Jurmala resort,<br />
National Park of Gauja with Sigulda and Cesis, Rundale Palace, historical centres<br />
of Liepaja, Ventspils and Kuldīga.<br />
In connection with that the previous research works in recreation and tourism<br />
spatial planning field from 80ies and 90ies are critically analysed and updated<br />
according to contemporary social and economical conditions.<br />
Results of the research will serve as a guidelines for local and state government<br />
and the executive bodies in planning the implementation measures of administrative<br />
territorial planning programmes. The outcome of the project aims will be<br />
described in the final report; it will be made available for public on the internet site.<br />
The implementation of the LARETS project will provide the wide influence<br />
and concrete results in following areas connected with tourism and recreation:<br />
1. In economic sphere:<br />
diverse, authentic, and competitive offer of the tourism and recreational<br />
products with balanced economical and social aspects;<br />
well developed and competitive enterpreneurship in tourism branch;<br />
balanced tourism and recreation product offer in all the regions of Latvia.<br />
2. In social, cultural and education sphere:<br />
improved state social environment and quality of life of inhabitants of<br />
Latvia;<br />
wide offer of domestic tourism;<br />
understanding of society about tourism and recreation as integrated part of<br />
modern national economy.<br />
3. In environment sphere:<br />
implemented principles of sustainability in planning of tourism and<br />
recreation development;<br />
preserved and maintained resources attractive for tourism and recreation ,<br />
spatial and landscape environment;<br />
preservation of the cultural heritage by active use for tourism and<br />
recreation purposes.<br />
4. In management and co-operation sphere:<br />
synergetic effect in co-opration between tourism and connected branches;<br />
optimal co-operation model in tourism and recreation development<br />
between involved state, municipal, non-governmental organizations and<br />
enterpreneurs according to the scheme: tourism market – state – region –<br />
local municipality – enterpreneur;<br />
closer co-operation between the Baltic States and alignment with Baltic Sea<br />
Region tourism movement and concrete development projects.
