There are 3 types of the recreation areas in Latvia: coastal, hilly lakelands,
river valleys.
Today tourism and recreation resources in Latvia are used very uneven. The
most popular tourist areas are Old Riga, historical centre of Riga, Jurmala resort,
National Park of Gauja with Sigulda and Cesis, Rundale Palace, historical centres
of Liepaja, Ventspils and Kuldīga.
In connection with that the previous research works in recreation and tourism
spatial planning field from 80ies and 90ies are critically analysed and updated
according to contemporary social and economical conditions.
Results of the research will serve as a guidelines for local and state government
and the executive bodies in planning the implementation measures of administrative
territorial planning programmes. The outcome of the project aims will be
described in the final report; it will be made available for public on the internet site.
The implementation of the LARETS project will provide the wide influence
and concrete results in following areas connected with tourism and recreation:
1. In economic sphere:
diverse, authentic, and competitive offer of the tourism and recreational
products with balanced economical and social aspects;
well developed and competitive enterpreneurship in tourism branch;
balanced tourism and recreation product offer in all the regions of Latvia.
2. In social, cultural and education sphere:
improved state social environment and quality of life of inhabitants of
Latvia;
wide offer of domestic tourism;
understanding of society about tourism and recreation as integrated part of
modern national economy.
3. In environment sphere:
implemented principles of sustainability in planning of tourism and
recreation development;
preserved and maintained resources attractive for tourism and recreation ,
spatial and landscape environment;
preservation of the cultural heritage by active use for tourism and
recreation purposes.
4. In management and co-operation sphere:
synergetic effect in co-opration between tourism and connected branches;
optimal co-operation model in tourism and recreation development
between involved state, municipal, non-governmental organizations and
enterpreneurs according to the scheme: tourism market – state – region –
local municipality – enterpreneur;
closer co-operation between the Baltic States and alignment with Baltic Sea
Region tourism movement and concrete development projects.
