ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The author used only open-source articles, books, and translations for
the construction of this document. Since the author does not speak Chinese, he
fully utilized the translation talents of people at the Foreign Broadcast
Information Service (FBIS) for the Chinese documents accessed for this work.
In addition to his own Russian translations and those of the Foreign Military
Studies Office (FMSO) official translator, Mr. Robert Love, the author
accessed FBIS for some of its Russian translations.
The author would like to thank the editors of the following
organizations for permission to reprint articles he wrote for their journals:
Parameters, Joint Force Quarterly, Military Review, The Journal of Information
War, and Slavic Military Studies. He would also like to thank the editors of
Russian Military Reform 1992-2002 for permission to print his chapter from
that book and the editors of Challenges of Peace Support into the 21 st Century
at the Swedish National Defense College for permission to print his article from
that publication.
Additionally, the author would like to extend a special thanks to Ms.
Karen Matthews. Ms. Matthews is a coauthor of Appendix Three on
cybercrime. She has a vast knowledge of the issues of computer crime and has
extensive work experience in this area.
The graphic artist for the cover and section dividers of this work is Mr.
Charles A. Martinson III of Fort Leavenworth. His creative design sets the tone
for the book’s content. Mr. Scott Henderson and Sergeant Ching Tuan provided
a Chinese version of the term “cyber silhouettes” (which could also be
translated as network-shadows or cyber snapshot) for the cover, and Mr. Njdeh
Asisian provided a Farsi version for the same term (which could be translated
as cybernetic shadows).
Finally, and most importantly, the author would like to extend his
thanks to other coworkers at the Foreign Military Studies Office (FMSO) who
have assisted him with various aspects of this and many other projects. Dr.
Jacob Kipp, the FMSO director, offered comments and recommendations that
improved the overall quality of the material herein; Mr. Lester Grau, Mr.
Robert Love, and Dr. Geoffrey Demarest helped edit initial drafts; Mr. Karl
Prinslow continually encouraged the author to tackle this project and provided
him with associated materials; Ms. Alice Mink assisted with product support
and clearance issues; and Mr. Stephen Gerecke and Ms. Linda Pride resolved
computer issues. Without their continued support this project would not have
been completed.
