CONCLUSION<br />

This chapter presents a str<strong>at</strong>egy-evalu<strong>at</strong>ion framework th<strong>at</strong> can facilit<strong>at</strong>e<br />

accomplishment of annual and long-term objectives. Effective str<strong>at</strong>egy evalu<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

allows an organiz<strong>at</strong>ion to capitalize on internal strengths as they develop, to exploit<br />

external opportunities as they emerge, to recognize and defend against thre<strong>at</strong>s, and to<br />

improve internal weaknesses before they become detrimental.<br />

Str<strong>at</strong>egists in successful organiz<strong>at</strong>ions take the time to formul<strong>at</strong>e, implement,<br />

and then evalu<strong>at</strong>e str<strong>at</strong>egies deliber<strong>at</strong>ely and system<strong>at</strong>ically. Good str<strong>at</strong>egists move their<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ion forward with purpose and direction, continually evalu<strong>at</strong>ing and improving<br />

the firm's external and internal str<strong>at</strong>egic position. Str<strong>at</strong>egy evalu<strong>at</strong>ion allows an<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ion to shape its own future r<strong>at</strong>her than allowing it to be constantly shaped by<br />

remote forces th<strong>at</strong> have little or no vested interest in the well-being of the enterprise.<br />

Although not a guarantee for success, str<strong>at</strong>egic management is allowing more<br />

and more organiz<strong>at</strong>ions to make effective long-term decisions, to execute those<br />

decisions more efficiently, and to take corrective actions as needed to assure success.<br />

Computers are being used increasingly to coordin<strong>at</strong>e str<strong>at</strong>egic-management activities<br />

and to assure th<strong>at</strong> decisions are based on good inform<strong>at</strong>ion. A key to effective str<strong>at</strong>egy<br />

evalu<strong>at</strong>ion and to successful str<strong>at</strong>egic management is an integr<strong>at</strong>ion of intuition and<br />

analysis.<br />

A potentially f<strong>at</strong>al problem is the tendency for analytical and intuitive issues to<br />

polarize. This polariz<strong>at</strong>ion leads to str<strong>at</strong>egy evalu<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> is domin<strong>at</strong>ed by either<br />

analysis or intuition, or to str<strong>at</strong>egy evalu<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> is discontinuous, with a lack of<br />

coordin<strong>at</strong>ing among analytical and intuitive issues.<br />

Str<strong>at</strong>egists in successful organiz<strong>at</strong>ions realize th<strong>at</strong> str<strong>at</strong>egic management is first<br />

and foremost a people process. It is an excellent vehicle for fostering organiz<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ion. People are wh<strong>at</strong> make the difference in organiz<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

The real key to effective str<strong>at</strong>egic management is to accept the premise th<strong>at</strong> the<br />

planning process is more important than the manager is continuously planning process<br />

is more important than the written plan, th<strong>at</strong> the manager is continuously planning and<br />

does not stop planning when the written plan is finished. The written plan is only a<br />

snapshot as of the moment it is approved. If the manager is not planning on a continues<br />

basis-planning, measuring, and revising the written plan can become obsolete the day it<br />
