If the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion subsequently diversifies into several lines of business, for example<br />

through acquisition, the corpor<strong>at</strong>e centre may choose to manage each business unit by<br />

setting profit targets, a form of output standardiz<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

The five parts of the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Mintzberg argues th<strong>at</strong> an organiz<strong>at</strong>ion can be subdivided into five different parts,<br />

as follows:<br />

a. The str<strong>at</strong>egic apex. These people control the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion and are held<br />

accountable for its performance.<br />

b. The oper<strong>at</strong>ing core. These deliver the basic mission or task of the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

c. The middle line. These are the managers and supervisors in direct line authority<br />

from the str<strong>at</strong>egic apex to the oper<strong>at</strong>ing core.<br />

d. The techno structure. These are staff analysts th<strong>at</strong> help to bring about<br />

coordin<strong>at</strong>ion through standardizing processes, outputs, skills or values.<br />

e. The support staffs. These are staff activities th<strong>at</strong> support the main work of the<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ion. For instance, in a manufacturing firm, support staff would include<br />

building maintenance, restaurant staff, public rel<strong>at</strong>ions, office cleaning, and so<br />

forth.<br />

The size and significance of these groups will vary depending on, for example, the<br />

type of work the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion is doing, the stability of its environment, and the size of<br />

the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion. We therefore need to understand these "contingency variables" and the<br />

effect they have on the structure of the business. But before we explore these<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ionships, we shall refer briefly to the organiz<strong>at</strong>ional processes th<strong>at</strong> bring the<br />

structure to life.<br />

Organiz<strong>at</strong>ional processes<br />

This chapter is concerned with the links between str<strong>at</strong>egy, organiz<strong>at</strong>ion structures<br />

and organiz<strong>at</strong>ional processes. Included in organiz<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

processes are decision-making, deleg<strong>at</strong>ion, formal and informal communic<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

training, indoctrin<strong>at</strong>ion, quality assurance, oper<strong>at</strong>ions planning and control, leadership,<br />

formal and informal power rel<strong>at</strong>ionships, management inform<strong>at</strong>ion systems, budgetary<br />

control, target-setting, incentive systems and disciplinary procedures. The aim of these<br />
