For Lilian and the Indigos - Above Top Secret

Soon winter came and the seeds became scarce. The bird feeders were not being filled by
the humans, and snow covered the seeds that came from the plants. Mama Bird could not
find enough seeds to feed Little Chick. Daddy Bird could no longer find worms on the
beach because it was frozen. The whole Bird family was sad and hungry; something had
to be done.
Mama Bird had a sister bird who lived in a big city far away where it was always warm
and the humans always put seed in the bird feeders. And so with sadness in their hearts
Mama and Daddy Bird sent Little Chick away to the city so that she could eat the seed
she needed.
Spring came but the humans still did not replenish the bird feeders, and it wouldn’t be
until late summer when the plant seeds would fall. But the ice melted and badger stopped
badgering, so Daddy Bird went worm hunting again – after all he was doubly sad,
missing Little Chick, and doubly tired, without seed to eat. He didn’t care about the “no
worm eating” rule; he just wanted to fly and be happy while his precious Little Chick was
gone.
Mama Bird and Daddy Bird did all they could to find a new place to live where seeds
were plentiful, but the forest and humans were also having troubles coming up with
seeds. The forest creatures and other birds began to discuss the old rule. They realized
that the worms may be the only food for the birds. They knew they had to then find the
best worm hunters to hunt the worms that lived on the beach where water meets land.
Daddy Bird knew that he was the best flyer because he was the only one that broke the
rule all that time Little Chick was at home. He also knew how to hunt the worms because
he watched the FISH, who also ate the worms. He came up with a different way to fly by
copying the FISH. All he had to do was pretend his whole body was ONE wing, and he
could flap the wing with such force that he burst with speed. So fast was Daddy Bird
when he copied the FISH that the worms were just too slow.
The forest creatures and all the birds had reached a decision. They would have a contest
to see what creatures were best at worm hunting. The contest winner would get all the
remaining seeds in the area as a reward, and they would also be rewarded with the job of
hunting worms for all the birds. The worm hunting job was very important and Daddy
Bird became very happy about the chance to do what he was good at AND be of service
to his fellow birds.
The contest was held and many forest creatures showed up to get the rewards. The
contest rules were simple. Whoever could collect the most worms and biggest worms
wins.
Mama Bird was excited because she knew Daddy Bird could win, and when he won, that
meant Little Chick could come home and they would always have seeds and worms to eat
so that Little Chick could grow up strong and Daddy Bird could always fly high.
