MAKING THE SPECTACLE THE PROCESS
To combat this new and unforeseen corruption, related primarily to technological
advancements, it would be best to put the idea of democracy on an equally advanced
foundation to level the playing field again. This is adaptation, it is not forsaking. It is an
unfortunate but necessary revolution that actually honors the American Spirit even if it's
admitting "we" failed our founding fathers.
Direct Democracy is synonymous with the term E-Government. New Zealand is toying
with this new idea – so is America, we just don't realize it. I'm talking about American
Idol and E-Bay meets C-Span. HUH? you say…
American Idol has shown us that the passive idiot box can be used as a tool for voting, in
conjunction with other parts of the communications infrastructure. E-Bay has shown that
whoever wants it the most gets it and if you fail to deliver or interfere with that process
you will be policed. C-Span has simply shown us that we can be made aware of what
legislation is going down in real-time. These systems provide a rough sketch of Direct
Democracy, of the potential for the serious streamlining of "politics as usual" into a
completely fair and novel method of social engineering that can be applied from local to
global scales. There will of course be details, from who codes the software with what to
what positions within the three branches and bureaus can go. We know that anyone can
be president, so how much more qualified must be his speech writer and advisors? The
beautiful thing about Direct Democracy is that these kinds of problems can be questioned
and resolved on the fly. It’s controlled Anarchy or Democracy without the middleman.
The most challenging aspect of Direct Democracy is adjusting to the relatively inclusive
role you would play in it as your own representative, as your own party. Essentially
Direct Democracy enables every registered citizen to take on the role of every branch of
government via four communication technologies: TV, RADIO, WWW, PHONE. And,
as is the case now, participation is voluntary, majority rules, and don't complain if you
don't participate and don't like how it works out.
VALIDATING ELECTRONIC VOTES
Electronic Voting is being tested and so far the results don't look good. The scenario is
the same, you go to a certain place at a certain time but the paper cards are now LCD
screens. The tally data could always be corrupted as hard copy, but now, as electronic
data, that concern is much greater and, as beta testing of the new voting booths proved,
hacking makes the E-Booth no better than the current technology. Whether voting from a
booth or the comfort of your home the issue of security is the same.
This concern is the only major flaw in the Direct Democracy system. Because the voting
is practically constant at the local level and frequent enough at larger levels, this problem
must be solved.
