OTIS IS WRONG
Usually I sit back and listen while other people debate/argue/rant. I love to actually pay
attention and observe two people go at it. Usually a rant begins as a point person A makes
and person B disagrees with. Then it just turns into a clusterfuck of ego and tangents.
I forget how it started but Otis says he was in the "Future Problem Solvers of America" in
high school. Sounds like one of those extracurricular enrichment programs for budding
nerds...
Well I'm a born inventor so I know something about problem solving.
The first rule of problem solving is you don't begin by putting restrictions on the solution.
In this scenario he was given, Otis had to figure out ONE overarching answer to
overpopulation within the next 100 years. It doesn't matter if two lesser concepts would
work better. That's the FPSA's fault but still...
His solution was to exodus people off the planet.
This is a pet peeve of mine, this notion that the only way to deal with our libido and
consequent unsustainable growth is to abandon Earth and go terraform Mars.
Otis tried to justify exodus as just an extension of the same homesteading spirit that
tamed North America.
Or, is it the slash and burn, shit-in-the-living room and move on kinda spirit, stemming
from desperation and lack of foresight?
The latter. But hey, the first space race was just a nationalistic sausage fest anyway.
I know about technology....the same technology needed to survive indefinitely in space is
the same needed here for a SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE – efficient energy,
waste management, and food production.
Even given the rate of technological progress, large Sci-Fi looking craft, capable of life
support for a relevant number of people are at least 200 years away – left to ourselves
anyway.
BESIDES....
