AMERICAN AGHORI
Fans of the show WildBoyz on MTV2 may recall the episode where Chris and Steve-O
visited some Aghoris in India and shared in some of their customs. Aghora is a sect of
Shiva worshippers and their customs, to westerners, will seem utterly disgusting and
pointless, and the Aghoris appear to be nothing but the equivalent to crazy street
bums…but there is a purpose.
Hanging out at outdoor crematoriums, smearing ashes of the dead all over the body,
eating their own waste and roadkill, drinking alcohol from skulls and smoking pot all
day, and according to Chris and Steve-O other unmentionable things – hopefully that'll be
on the DVD – why? To what end?
There are two paths.
The right hand path is one of distanced worship where the divine is regarded as "other."
The left hand path is one of intimate actualization where the divine is regarded as one.
Neither path is more or less correct, as it's the individual's subjective preference;
however, the paths could be no more different.
The customs and rituals of the average western right hand path amount to a co-dependent
relationship with the church where the clergyman is paid to masturbate the ego of the
follower while simultaneously inducing guilt and acceptance of one's flaws. The follower
is encouraged to witness and pray and dilly dally in the petty BS of secularism.
The Aghori instead attempts to obliterate the ego right in front of God, both inside and
out. He does this by intoxication and humility respectively and by forcing the notion
upon himself that even the most putrid of creations is ultimately beautiful play. He
distances himself from the petty BS of secularism in location and appearance.
An Aghori is simply a person who wants to know God NOW and is NOT AFRAID of the
means to do that.
Now that we understand the Aghori, we can examine how American culture has spawned
similar memes. Firstly I must point out a great irony of this culture clash… Aghoris are
ultimately still Hindu which means Cows are still very sacred to them. To an Aghori,
beef consumption is one of the major sins, a repugnant act. But Baba, you can Have it
your way! I'm loving it!
Speaking of disgusting consumables, how about our TV show, Fear Factor? Ah but they
chug organ smoothies for money not enlightenment.
