Technical Reference
• log4j-trace.properties - This Server Log will log extremely low-level debug
information including all the debug information from log4j-debug.properties.
• log4j-trace-soap.properties - This Server Log will log extremely low-level
SOAP information including all the debug information from log4jtrace.properties.
Note: If you wish to limit the number of choices of log configurations available in the
Server Logs and Diagnostics tool, you can move or remove these files from the
/tomcat/webapps/META-INF directory.
Warning: Do not use the "Debug", "Debug with SOAP" "Trace" or "Trace with
SOAP" modes for continuous server use, since doing so decreases the performance of
the server, and also produces very large log files.
If you want to configure the logs in other ways than the above options allow, you can
create your own Log Configuration File using standard Log4j syntax (more
information can be found at http://logging.apache.org/log4j/docs/
documentation.html).
Placing a new log4j configuration file with the name matching the pattern
log4j*.properties in the /tomcat/webapps/META-INF
directory, will cause it to appear in the drop-down list among the other Log
Configuration Files and can thus be selected.
Note: When you restart the server, the Log Configuration File will revert to the default
selection. To set the default log level, see the instructions below.
11.1.3 Changing the Default Log Level of the Spotfire
Server
To change the default log level of the Spotfire Server, you need to manually edit a
configuration file located on each server.

To Change the Default Log Level of the Spotfire Server
1 Open the file /tomcat/webapps/spotfire/WEB-INF/
web.xml in a text or xml editor.
2 Look for the param-name com.spotfire.logging.config.file.
3 Change the param-name to one one of the log configuration files described above.
4 Restart the Spotfire Server.
To change the default log level of the Configuration Console, edit the file /tomcat/webapps/admin/WEB-INF/web.xml instead.
To change the default log level of the Spotfire Controller, edit the file /tomcat/webapps/controller/WEB-INF/web.xml instead.
