Configure the System
5 Configure the System
5.1 Overview
After you have set up a database and installed the server software, you must perform a
number of steps to get the system up and running. This chapter will guide you through
the different steps you need to perform.
5.2 Spotfire System Security
You may wish to configure security in the Spotfire system.
There are several (manual) measures that may be taken. The options available and
recommended are totally depending on the the environment in which the Spotfire
system is installed. You should confer with network managers and the like to come up
with a solution that fits your specific environment.
The different measures you can take include:
• Set up Spotfire to communicate using HTTPS. See the section “Setting up
HTTPS on a Spotfire Server” on page 86 and/or “Setting up HTTPS in a Load
Balanced Environment” on page 97 for more information about this.
• Using X.509 client certificates to authenticate users. See the section “Creating
and Installing a Self-Signed Client Certificate” on page 95 for more information
about this.
• Setting up LDAP authentication over SSL. See the section “Configuring
LDAPS” on page 91 for more information about this.
• Configuring the Spotfire Server(s) to authenticate with the database using
Kerberos. See the section “Database Authentication using Kerberos” on page 91
for more information about this.
• Restricting access to the configuration console. See the section “Restricting
Access to the Configuration Console” on page 89 for more information about
this.
Note: For optimal security some of these measure should be taken before you set up
basic configuration. If you think any of these measures apply to you, then it is
recommended that you read the corresponding instructions before you proceed below.
5.3 Database Drivers
Spotfire Server ships with DataDirect database drivers. While these drivers work well
for test environments and for running the database preparation scripts as described
above, it is strongly recommended that drivers native to your database server are used
in a production environment. Native drivers (JDBC) are available from your database
