Safety and Workplace Reading:
NATO Alphabet Exercise
Recall and being an active reader to improve recall are a major focus in the Safety and
Workplace Reading workshops offered by Keyano College.
Practice Recall
This reading/ memory task will test your ability to manage your workplace memory
habits. The NATO alphabet is used to communicate messages over the radio in a variety
alphabet (below). Realistically, time is money in the workplace and we are often not
given much time to read and act. Also, distractions are part of the workplace.
¾ Being in the moment for reading tasks begins with AWARENESS: awareness of
your purpose, awareness of your strategies, awareness of your habits.
¾ Being in the moment requires replacing passive reading with active reading.
What strategies did you use?
Did you reorganize the data?
Did you engage your senses?
Did you use repetition?
