1) Industry-first rear inflatable seat belts combine
the attributes of traditional seat belts and airbags
to provide additional crash protection, giving
parents additional peace of mind when children
are rear-seat passengers. 2) MyKey, a Ford
innovation with features including a maximum
speed control and a buckle up reminder; adds a
“Do Not Disturb” update allowing parents to block
their teens from receiving phone calls and deter
text messages while driving. 3) Pediatric test
dummies allow for the development of restraints
that will improve the safety of children. 4) Ford’s
Blind Spot Information System (BLIS ® ) with
cross-traffic alert helps detect vehicles in
blind spots during normal driving and traffic
approaching from the sides when reversing out
of parking spots.
Advanced high-strength steels are used
extensively in the all-new Focus body
structure that has been engineered to exceed
global safety standards. High-strength steels
make up more than 55 percent of the body
shell, and more than 26 percent of the
vehicle’s structure is formed from ultrahigh-strength
and boron steels.
Ford continues to impress third-party evaluators with its safety
technology, boasting 11 IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety) Top Safety Picks in 2011 for Edge, Explorer, F-150, Fiesta,
Flex, Focus, Fusion and Taurus.
Ford safety features are earning awards as well. The company’s
industry-exclusive rear inflatable seat belts earned the Traffic
Safety Achievement Award at last year’s World Traffic Safety
Symposium. This advanced restraint system is designed to help
reduce head, neck and chest injuries in rear sear passengers. In
October, the seat belts won Popular Mechanics’ Breakthrough
Product Award. First offered in the Explorer, Ford plans to offer the
technology in other nameplates globally over time.
At the Ford Research and Innovation Center, upgrades were
made to the state-of-the-art VIRtual Test Track EXperiment
(VIRTTEX) simulator. The improved image rendering technologies
and capabilities of VIRTTEX will help in the development of safety
and driver-aid technologies.
