m<strong>an</strong>ifestation; yet their presence does not exclude other contributions from elsewhere, especially in the case<br />

<strong>of</strong> more encompassing <strong>an</strong>d pr<strong>of</strong><strong>an</strong>e expressions <strong>of</strong> slave culture. For inst<strong>an</strong>ce, single <strong>an</strong>d double metal bells<br />

were widely used in both West <strong>an</strong>d Central Africa, <strong>an</strong>d thus musical traditions from these two macroregions<br />

reinforced each other in the New World. Known in Brazil under its Yoruba name, the agogô entered<br />

c<strong>an</strong>domblé, batuque <strong>an</strong>d capoeira alike. <strong>The</strong> Brazili<strong>an</strong> berimbau derives from Central Afric<strong>an</strong> music bows,<br />

but the woven rattle (caxixi) that accomp<strong>an</strong>ies it in Brazil is likely to be <strong>of</strong> West Afric<strong>an</strong> origin (see<br />

Figure 2.2).<br />
