CASE STUDY
Southern Medical’s Master Plan Outline for care, care facilitation and
integrated planning
This outline will serve as a guide for adding the desired functionalities
and ultimately arriving at the stated ambitions:
Care process
This aims at the role of the care provider. The systems involved are
PCIS modules, various specialist workstations, regional EPR. Core
functions include: orders, results, findings, standardized care paths.
Over the next five years, we will take the following steps:
■
introducing and utilizing PCIS modules:
– complete availability of all relevant findings;
– complete availability of orders, results and medication history;
– computerized physician order entry;
■
■
■
■
carrying out pilots: protocol based work processes and care pathways;
introducing medical outcomes registration;
introducing specific medical specialist workstations;
carrying out pilots: access to PCIS for regional partners, regional
integrated patient planning.
Care facilitation
Should aim at the role of provider of care support activities. This role
has as its most important aspects:
■
■
the acceptance (or initiation) of examination requests, the subsequent
planning and monitoring of the progress, and finally making the results
available. Also dealing with the care-supporting activities
administratively;
the support of the specific work process of the execution of the
examination requests, or alternatively the comprehensive
computerization of the execution.
The information systems involved are: Radiology, Laboratory, Pathology,
PACS, Medication, etc. Functions include: orders, planning, results
reporting, work flow management, management information reporting, etc.
A particular aspect for this segment is the digitized availability of
images and analogue signals (a Picture Archiving and Communication
System (PACS)). This accords with our efforts to make all patient
information available. Supplementary to the argument for improved
