11.4.12 Testing of prototype joints<br />

It is recommended that the final design of a bonded joint should if<br />

possible be validated by means of tests, using specimens with the same<br />

construction <strong>and</strong> fabrication technique as for the final job. Such tests<br />

will lead to a value for the factored resistance, after dividing by � m ,<br />

which can then be compared with the force it would be called on to<br />

transmit under factored loading.<br />

British St<strong>and</strong>ard BS.8118 requires a minimum of five tests, from which<br />

the factored resistance P f is determined as follows:<br />

where P m =mean failing load from all the tests, S d =st<strong>and</strong>ard deviation,<br />

<strong>and</strong> � m =material factor, taken as 3.0.<br />
