<strong>PK</strong>-<strong>232</strong> OPERATING MANUAL<br />

Pactor OPERATION<br />

is the character defined by the PTOVER command that<br />

switches your system from being the Information Sending Station<br />

(ISS) to the Information Receiving Station (IRS) and switches the<br />

distant system from being the information receiving station to<br />

the information sending station. This single character operates<br />

like the “+?” does in AMTOR.<br />

The FCC requires station identification once every ten minutes. It's<br />

sufficient to begin with “QRA (mycall)" or end your transmission with<br />

"QRA (mycall)” before the "” changeover, or use the <br />

“HERE-IS" to send your own Auto-AnswerBack message. For the "HERE-IS"<br />

command to function, you must have your AAB text entered.<br />

11.6.3.1 Ending An ARO Pactor Contact<br />

When you've finished your “final finals”, to the distant station and both<br />

stations are ready to end the Pactor ARQ contact, you can end the contact<br />

and terminate the link in several different ways:<br />

Type to stop sending after the transmit buffer is empty.<br />

breaks the link and returns your <strong>PK</strong>-<strong>232</strong> to Command Mode in<br />

Pactor Standby. This is the best way to end a Pactor contact.<br />

• Type to stop sending after the transmit buffer is empty,<br />

send your Morse ID, and return to Pactor Standby and Command Mode.<br />

• Transmitter and returns to Pactor Standby and Command Mode. This<br />

is the best way to end a contact if you want to identify your<br />

station in Morse code as well.<br />

• Wait until all the text has been sent, then type to return<br />

to Command Mode, then type "R” to break the link. The <strong>PK</strong>-<strong>232</strong> will<br />

then go into the Pactor Standby mode.<br />

• Type to return to Command Mode, then type "R R<br />

" to break the link immediately If there are characters left<br />

in the transmit buffer, they will not be sent. This method should<br />

onlv be used for an emergency shutdown as it does not send the<br />

control signal to the other station that informs it you are<br />

shutting down. As a result the other station will continue to send<br />

until it's internal timer turns it off.<br />

11.6.4 Long Path Contacts<br />

If the station you are going to call is more than half way around the<br />

earth i.e. a long path contact, precede that station's callsign with an<br />

exclamation point. The will change the Pactor timing to allow for the<br />

extended radio propagation delay. You would type:<br />

PTCONN !N7ML <br />

If your station doesn't link within a period of time determined by the<br />

ARQTMO command (default 60 seconds), your station will automatically<br />

stop transmitting.<br />
