3.4 Interactions of Carriage System, Load, and Speed on Soil Displacement<br />

This Section contains interesting cross references between unlinked data originating from<br />

the evaluation of the influence of speed and the evaluation of the rear tyres on soil dis-<br />

placement.<br />

Figure 46 shows that a track at 12 t causes similar soil displacement as an implement tyre<br />

carrying about 1/3 of the load. Moreover, the soil displacement is reduced to zero at 500<br />

mm depth for the track. This pronounces the overall ability of the TerraTrac to spread high<br />

payloads uniformly while causing a minimum amount of compaction. The TerraTrac car-<br />

ries 2.67 times the load of the implement tyres and causes the same soil displacement. This<br />

is very similar with the comparison the the T12-700 and 23-11 in Section 3.2.2 whereby<br />

the tracked undercarriage system carrying 33 t causes similar soil displacement as an 11 t<br />

wheeled combination.<br />

Figure 47 shows that three passes of a 900/5/0.5 tyre have the same impact on soil dis-<br />

placement as one pass at a much slower speed emphasizing the effect of speed on soil dis-<br />

placement. This again pronounces the potential damage to headlands where slow speeds<br />

are common. In this critical range from 0.29 m/s to 0.85 m/s a decrease of speed to ap-<br />

proximately 1/3 increases soil displacement; consequently the increase in soil density re-<br />

sults in the same amount as three passes of the same tyre at the higher speed. Fortunately<br />

for most of the field, speeds do not become as small. As Section 3.1.2 showed, for higher<br />
